Overview

The Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) seeks an innovative scientist to serve as the organization’s Scientific Director (SD). The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge across the SLAS Community, including basic science, translational research, drug discovery and development, clinical research, informatics, and laboratory automation. The SD will be a thought leader within the SLAS scientific community and will be familiar with the work of related organizations. This full-time exempt position oversees three direct reports—the Assistant Scientific Director, Publishing Manager, and Program Manager—and maintains key relationships with the Board of Directors, Knowledge Content and Delivery Council (KCDC), Scientific Programming Committees, Event Program Committees, and Editorial Boards. The SD reports to the Chief Executive Officer and collaborates with the Director of Marketing and the Director of Global Events to provide strategic oversight of scientific content and delivery as well as associated programs and services. The SD monitors the external environment and works with Society leadership to ensure the organization addresses the scientific content needs of its community. This position is remote within the United States. The Scientific Director Role Essential Duties and Responsibilities In alignment with the Society’s Mission and Strategic Plan, guide volunteer leaders to develop, plan, implement, and deliver the Society’s global scientific content with the support of the Assistant Scientific Director and with input from relevant teams on logistical elements. Support and guide the KCDC to monitor the SLAS Community environment, identify trends, and address educational and scientific needs across priority demographics. Develop and/or present SLAS-related technical content (e.g., conference podium presentations, panels, short courses, articles, webinars, road shows). Serve as a professional liaison to KCDC, providing information to broaden the Council’s knowledge and preparing reports and summaries as needed. Evaluate the effectiveness of scientific content programs using analysis from the Assistant Scientific Director and collaborate with the team to implement improvements. Support marketing and publishing efforts for scientific content products and interpret scientific concepts to support marketing messages; offer strategic guidance tied to industry relations. Collaborate with the Publishing Manager, the Program Manager, SLAS Committees, stakeholders, contractors, and volunteers to achieve strategic goals. Develop and maintain relationships with related scientific disciplines and industries to stay current with trends and promote SLAS programs and tools. Provide leadership and development to direct reports and maintain professional relationships across the virtual work model. Mentor the Assistant Scientific Director in building networks and representing SLAS externally. Serve as the scientific spokesperson at the direction of the CEO. Identify, apply for, and facilitate grant opportunities from private foundations, pharmaceutical trusts, or government calls to support SLAS programming. Required Skills and Experience

PhD in chemistry, biology, biotechnology or related field. Proven scientific expertise in relevant areas, preferably with peer-reviewed publications or patents. Minimum 10 years of management experience coordinating priorities across multiple departments, locations, or skill levels; minimum five years of direct personnel management experience. Experience with scientific content program development and deployment in non-profit associations; experience in scientific society management is desired. Connections with a broad scientific network and ability to work with a diverse SLAS community, including academia, government, industry researchers, and technology providers. Strong organizational skills and effective use of online repositories and project management tools. Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate ideas clearly for global audiences (in-person, online, print). Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage a diverse professional membership, team, service providers, and organizations. Strong staff management and development capabilities; leadership, flexibility, and creative problem-solving skills. Professional demeanor, business ethics, and high integrity. Proficiency with productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Dropbox, Zoom, Teams) and adaptability to virtual work models. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 25% annually. Additional Considerations

The salary range for this position is $185,000 – 215,000. A competitive compensation package will be offered to attract an outstanding candidate. Equal Opportunity
