The Senior Financial and Data Analyst is a key member of the college’s Resources and Operations group. This role works collegially with college employees under limited supervision and can work independently to achieve specified outcomes, reporting to the Director of Resources and Operations.
Responsibilities
Oversee the budget and financial affairs of the College to ensure proper financial management, in collaboration with the senior management team.
Perform highly complex technical financial functions, including advanced fiscal analysis and projections to develop new methods for execution.
Monitor and guide departments to manage their budgets and resources effectively, including operating funds, PaCE funds, SSETF funds, and over 150 auxiliary accounts; advise the Dean and management on critical business decisions.
Prepare reports outlining the financial position of the college across multiple funding sources and auxiliary organizations.
Review/approve financial transactions (budget requests, travel, procurement, payments) for appropriate use of funding sources and compliance with university policies.
Process financial transactions (journals, expense transfers, HR expenses, direct payments, reimbursements, invoicing, requisitions, change orders).
Provide strategic fiscal guidance on managing the college’s annual operating fund budget (> $20M).
Manage quarterly projections and year-end closing processes.
Perform fiscal analysis related to budgets, funding, and projects; conduct data analysis of salaries, workloads, enrollment trends, and research activity to project fiscal impacts.
Provide training and guidance on financially-related policies and procedures; lead a team of staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Extensive knowledge of budgetary procedures, accounting principles, and financial management practices
Forecasting and planning revenue from all funding sources (State General Funds, Trust Funds, gifts, contracts)
Initiative, flexibility, judgment, and discretion
Proficiency with software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database management)
Ability to learn PeopleSoft, Data Warehouse, and Common Finance System
Excellent oral and written communication; strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to respond quickly to problems with sound judgment and policy interpretation
Detail-oriented and capable of providing excellent customer service and public relations
Ability to train and supervise staff
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training
Six years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to improved policies, procedures, or programs
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree
Experience with budget projection and data analysis
Higher education experience in accounting, finance, business, academic planning, program support, or related services
Three years of progressively responsible administrative work experience
Experience with SJSU financial systems or similar (PeopleSoft, Data Warehouse, Common Finance System)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Compensation Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist – Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,437/month - $8,387/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,970/month - $13,544/month
