Overview
In this role you will:
Conduct TEM/Cryo-TEM characterization (imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy) and analyze the data to support battery development and failure analysis work.
Develop and validate TEM analysis methods and standard operating procedures for battery materials analysis.
Prepare TEM samples for analysis and develop appropriate sample preparation techniques to preserve sensitive constituents from air, moisture, and other environmental factors.
Implement protocols and replication testing to establish the correlations between process, property, and performance in lithium-ion battery systems, thereby providing mechanistic insights into degradation modes.
Collaborate with diverse functional groups to undertake projects focused on battery material characterization and failure analysis.
Adhere to the highest standards of laboratory practices. Maintain an organized and clean laboratory environment, ensure that sample pieces are properly labeled and stored, and comply with all applicable laboratory safety regulations.
Train, guide, and define tasks for technicians to facilitate work at high standards.
Qualifications
BS degree.
Experience in transmission electron microscopy techniques including cryo-TEM, STEM, EELS, EDS and cryo-FIB sample preparation for TEM.
3+ years of relevant industry experience
MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or related field
Skilled in TEM sample preparation methods (FIB/SEM, milling, etc) and troubleshooting of electron microscopes functionality
Expertise in investigating battery materials and failure mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques
Experience with battery teardown, battery material characterization, and electrochemical techniques for battery research, development, and production.
Strong verbal and written communication, teamwork, and project management skills
Attention to detail, ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
