Position: Software Engineer Manager - Supply Chain
The Home Depot is hiring a Software Engineer Manager - Supply Chain. This role involves leading a team of software engineers focused on Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) and/or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), with emphasis on conveyor routing, sortation, order streaming, goods-to-person, and labor optimization, and ensuring effective integration between systems to enhance operational efficiency. You will contribute to product development and help grow the next generation of engineering talent. You will also collaborate with strategic warehouse automation vendors to ensure third-party tools and applications are available to product teams interested in using them.
Base pay range
$140,000.00/yr - $240,000.00/yr
Position Purpose
As a Software Engineer Manager, you will be responsible for managing a team of software engineers that develops software specifically for Warehouse Execution Systems (WES) and/or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). This includes working on logic and execution related to conveyor routing, sortation, order streaming, goods-to-person, and task and labor optimization, ensuring effective integration between the two systems to enhance operational efficiency. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the products we create and help grow the next generation of engineering talent. In addition, you will be given the chance to work with our most strategic warehouse automation vendors to ensure that 3rd party tools and applications are readily available to all product teams that are interested in using them.
Key Responsibilities
Delivery & Execution (30%): Collaborates and pairs with product team members (UX, engineering, and product management) to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions
Documents, reviews and ensures that all quality and change control standards are met
Writes custom code or scripts to automate infrastructure, monitoring services, and test cases
Works with vendors and partners for the successful implementation of critical tooling and platforms
Creates meaningful dashboards, logging, alerting, and responses to ensure that issues are captured and addressed proactively
Contributes to enterprise-wide tools to drive destructive testing, automation, and engineering empowerment
Evaluates new technologies for adoption across the enterprise
Participates in and leads review board sessions to drive consistency across the enterprise
Fills in on product teams for engineers who are out of the office
Leverages Agentic AI approaches to build autonomous workflows that improve warehouse efficiency, such as dynamic task allocation, order streaming, routing, and labor optimization
Support & Enablement (10%): Fields questions from engineers, product teams, or support teams
Monitors tools and participates in conversations to encourage collaboration across product teams
Provides application support for software running in production
Acts as a technical escalation point for the engineers on the team
People (50%): Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to Software Engineers
Attracts, retains, and develops top talent to build a world class Software Engineering Team
Conducts annual and mid-year reviews by reviewing individual development plans and team feedback
Fosters collaboration with team members to drive consistency across product teams, and finds opportunities to expose engineers to career interests
Acts as a proponent of modern software development practices
Guides team members in strategy, alignment, analysis, and execution tasks within and across product teams
Participates in and contributes to learning activities around modern software design and development core practices
Learning (10%):
Learns through reading, tutorials, and videos, new technologies and best practices being used within other technology organizations
Builds relationships with technology leaders at other companies to learn best practices and elegant solutions to common problems
Direct Manager/Direct Reports
Typically reports to the Software Engineer Sr. Manager, Technology Director or Sr. Director.
Travel Requirements
Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.
Physical Requirements
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
Working Conditions
Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be eighteen years of age or older.
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
Mastery of an object oriented programming language (preferably Java)
Preferred Qualifications
5-7 years of relevant work experience
Deep understanding of warehousing and logistics and how software impacts warehouse operations
Experience working with and communicating with PLCs
Experience developing conveyor control systems, routing systems, sortation systems, merge systems, goods to person systems, order streaming/work release systems, and WMS
Experience with conveyor components and automation equipment
Experience applying Agentic AI frameworks to orchestrate autonomous workflows
Knowledge of reinforcement learning, planning algorithms, or autonomous agents for optimization
Experience leading teams building AI copilots or autonomous task agents
Experience in Warehouse Management Systems, greenfield installations and upgrades
Mastery of cloud computing (preferably GCP)
Mastery of Python and a modern web framework (e.g., Spring MVC, Node.js)
Mastery of SQL and relational databases
Experience with modern product development processes and pipelines
Strong troubleshooting and monitoring/log analysis skills
Ability to guide junior engineers and manage vendor relationships
Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field
