Overview
Director of Software Development role at T-Mobile. The Director will drive strategy with senior leaders, collaborate with business peers, and build and grow high-performing software development teams. This executive role involves end-to-end responsibility for strategy, development, operations through DevOps, and delivery of digital platforms that support T-Mobile’s customer-facing and internal services. The Director will impact revenue by driving efficiencies for customers and agents, enable secure connections across support and commerce channels, and lead the evaluation and adoption of in-house applications, open-source technologies, and third-party solutions. A key focus is identifying opportunities for innovation to maintain T-Mobile’s leadership in a competitive market. The role also entails building a team of software development managers, architects, product managers, engineers, testers, and analysts to design, deliver, and support innovative solutions and services. Form strategic partnerships with Product, Business, Enterprise domains, and stakeholders inside and outside the technology organization. Develop an understanding of their business strategies, generate ideas, manage issues, and ensure alignment with overall strategy. Plan and manage a portfolio of high-quality products and services through their lifecycle (envisioning, investing, sustaining, retiring). Contribute to strategy and roadmaps in collaboration with other directors and enterprise architecture. Maintain knowledge of developments in the area of specialty and incorporate innovations where appropriate. Drive innovation and adoption of industry-leading practices including open source, CI/CD, cloud, and microservices/container architecture. Recommend and implement technology direction for applications and services, including packaged, SaaS, and custom-developed solutions. Lead system design of highly scalable systems with telemetry and monitoring, enabling self-healing capabilities. Drive cost efficiencies in operations and maintain technology roadmaps to adapt to new technologies. Modernize legacy application architecture and infrastructure. Deliver and support a portfolio of services to achieve business objectives; continually improve enterprise-scale services. Ensure effective collaboration between technology teams; oversee design, development, and operations of high-performance, highly available systems. Efficiently manage staff to support continuous availability; accountable for department budget, delivery, service performance, and cost optimization. Develop staffing strategies leveraging employees, managed services, and partners; contribute to overall strategy, policies, and processes. Hire, manage, and develop a team of senior managers, managers, and individual contributors; lead through change and mentor senior staff to maximize engagement and performance. Education and Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience required. Master’s/Advanced Degree preferred. More than 10 years of professional experience leading software development teams in a large-scale company environment. 7+ years of architecting and implementing digital service platforms and solutions. 7+ years of mentoring and developing technical leaders within the software development domain. Proven platform leadership: 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading large-scale digital platform initiatives serving millions of users. End-to-end platform delivery: Experience designing, developing, and operating digital platforms with measurable business impact. Modern digital engineering practices: Cloud-native platforms, API-first and microservices architecture, containerization, DevOps automation, and CI/CD pipelines at scale. Scalable and resilient systems: Security, high availability, reliability, observability, and enterprise-grade compliance. Data-driven excellence: Analytics, data pipelines, personalization, and AI/ML integrations to drive digital experiences. Cross-domain integration: Integrates with CRM, billing, identity, commerce, and other enterprise systems for seamless omnichannel journeys. Customer-first mindset: Align platform engineering with customer experience strategies for secure, intuitive interactions. Talent and culture building: Develop engineering leaders and teams with a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Strategic influence: Partner with product, design, business, and enterprise technology leaders to deliver growth-ready digital platform strategies. Base Pay Range: $194,100 - $262,700 Corporate Bonus Target: 25% The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the role. The actual starting pay will be based on qualifications and experience. Most corporate employees are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance.
