Overview
Amherst College seeks a field-leading authority on liberal arts career development and the “world of work” to serve as the Lewis-Sebring Executive Director of the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning. The Loeb Center, endowed with a naming gift in 2016 and supported by additional restricted endowments since, centers its work on guiding Amherst students and recent alumni toward purposeful career pathways while drawing on a traditional liberal arts curricular model that emphasizes critical thinking, clear communication, and openness to change. The Executive Director will cultivate the potential of a diverse and ambitious student body and collaborate with faculty dedicated to holistic student development. With Amherst’s substantial resources and a strong alumni network, the Executive Director will sustain and evolve the Loeb Center as a benchmark undergraduate career-services operation. The role also offers a platform for engaging in national conversations about the relevance of the arts-and-sciences curriculum to career success and for preparing Amherst graduates for meaningful, impactful roles from day one. Amherst College, founded in 1821, is a leading national liberal arts college with a large endowment, a small student body, and a high faculty-to-student ratio designed to support rigorous, personalized education. The Loeb Center emphasizes self-assessment and in-depth career exploration through internships and industry-specific advising (Career Communities), along with programs such as the Meiklejohn Fellows Program, the Charles Hamilton Houston Internship Program, Career Trek, and the Sophomore Summit. The Center collaborates with a broad network of alumni, parents, and employers to provide comprehensive career development opportunities. Position reports directly to the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, working closely with colleagues in institutional advancement and student affairs. The Executive Director manages all services of the Loeb Center, supervises a professional staff, oversees an Alumni-in-Residence program, and stewards an alumni Advisory Council. The role also involves managing an operating budget and ensuring services meet current and future career dynamics, including the integration of new technologies and AI considerations. As a key member of Amherst’s leadership team, the Executive Director will share expertise on the evolving world of work with faculty and support students in making effective use of the Loeb Center’s offerings. Responsibilities
Manage all Loeb Center services and supervise a professional staff of 18 educators. Oversee an Alumni-in-Residence program and steward an alumni Advisory Council. Collaborate with Provost, Dean of the Faculty, and colleagues in advancement and student affairs to align services with institutional goals. Lead strategic planning to assess and adapt the Center’s programs in light of evolving career dynamics and trends, including AI. Serve as a primary representative of the Loeb Center to faculty, students, alumni, employers, and the broader higher education community. Manage a $1.6 million operating budget and ensure effective resource allocation. Support a culture of personal, one-on-one career counseling balanced with scalable programming and innovation. Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree in an arts-and-sciences discipline required; advanced degree preferred. Minimum of five years of responsible leadership or management experience, preferably in college or university career center administration, human resources, professional development, or workforce development. Clear understanding of the role of a selective national liberal arts college within US higher education and the ability to engage faculty credibly while stewarding relationships with alumni, parents, and employers. Knowledge of career readiness essentials and ability to engage and support Amherst’s student body. Ability to assess and implement new technology used in career services; facility with emerging best practices related to artificial intelligence is advantageous. Strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills; ability to manage multiple projects; entrepreneurial disposition and willingness to innovate. Capacity to collaborate with academic leadership and to guide strategic development of career services in alignment with institutional priorities. Compensation and Benefits
