Overview
The Neurologist (Physician) is responsible for managing the full spectrum of patient care in both outpatient and inpatient care settings of Neurology to evaluate, diagnose, consult, and order appropriate diagnostic studies and treatments for patients. The incumbent will provide consultative evaluations and treatments to patients referred from other sections of the hospital and/or affiliated VA outpatient clinics and perform administrative functions and other tasks as assigned by the Associate Chief of Staff of Acute Medical Service. Mission : The VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) provides coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health, surgical, intensive and extended care to Veterans in a timely, accessible and cost effective manner. It is a fully-integrated medical care facility with a dual campus and combined VA mission. Responsibilities
Medical assessment and consultation: evaluate, document, diagnose, order diagnostic studies and treatments for patients referred from other sections of the hospital and/or affiliated VA outpatient clinics; perform related administrative tasks as assigned. Additional roles/responsibilities: provide expert consultation and treatment in the outpatient Neurology Clinic; collaborate with the Neurology Nurse Practitioner; educate patients and families; maintain high standards of patient care and compliance. Provide consultation services for other hospitalized patients; after-hours care as directed; participate in clinical leadership duties including hospital committees, patient safety, quality and performance improvement, inpatient flow initiatives and peer review; may have sub-specialty skills or certifications utilized within the medical service. Deliver comprehensive care for neurological illnesses; communicate treatment plans with hospitalists, primary care providers, nursing, social work, clerical staff, pharmacy and subspecialists; ensure high quality patient care in a resourceful and efficient manner. Basic Requirements
(summary): United States Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed where qualified citizens cannot be recruited as per VA policy). Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school approved by VA; current, full, and unrestricted medical license in the United States. Residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA approved, or equivalent). PRPs (Physician Resident Providers) may be appointed under supervision for certain residency circumstances. Proficiency in English (spoken and written). Additional Requirements : Board certified or board eligible. Other important notes: refer to VA Handbook 5005 for physician qualification standards; ECFMG verification for foreign medical graduates when applicable. Other Information
