This position is the Trauma Pharmacy Specialist, a decentralized, day-shift rounding role responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients in the Trauma Service. The role includes active participation in daily multidisciplinary rounds, optimizing medication therapy, and ensuring safe and effective medication use in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment. Weekend and holiday staffing is required approximately every 6th weekend with comp days. The role includes precepting students and residents, committee involvement, and engagement in research or quality improvement initiatives. A strong desire to contribute to ongoing quality improvement and excellent clinical, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.
Responsibilities
Monitors drug therapy of patients by participating in medical rounds or routinely evaluating the patient’s medication regimen, medical problems, laboratory data, and special procedures.
Provide leadership and care for patients in assigned areas; guide providers and patients on best practices and established guidelines for care and ensure safe and effective drug use through clinical involvement.
Assist nursing and other disciplines in admission and discharge planning and patient education related to medication use.
Provide drug information and educational programs to medical and nursing staffs, other health care practitioners, and pharmacy staff.
Maintain professional competence by attending/ presenting at conferences, continuing education, reading literature, and publishing clinical or practice-related work.
Participate in administrative, quality assurance, performance improvement, and clinical research activities within the department.
Participate in medication use evaluations and reviews of orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
Promote medication safety and document findings of medication errors, unsafe conditions, or near misses.
Dispense medications from the provider’s order and ensure policies related to drug distribution are followed.
Manage drug use control in assigned service areas; identify problems and offer resolutions.
Make decisions related to provision of pharmaceutical services in assigned areas; respond to adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
Communicate findings and recommendations in the clinical information system and maintain required records per legal and hospital policies.
Supervise technicians and participate in the orientation and education of pharmacy students, residents, and new department employees.
Engage in educational and scholarly activities related to drug therapy to enhance knowledge of colleagues; participate in planning and implementing changes to improve productivity.
Complete annual clinical competency evaluations and other assignments as required.
Qualifications
Must possess current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided: WV, PA, MD, or OH.
WV: Pharmacist license through the West Virginia State Board of Pharmacy
PA: Pharmacist license through the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy
MD: Pharmacist license through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy
OH: Pharmacist license through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 60 days of hire date.
Preferred qualifications: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.
Experience in at least one of the following: completion of a PGY-2 residency in an applicable clinical field; or PGY-1 residency with Board Certification; or PGY-1 residency with three years of relevant pharmacist experience; or three years of relevant pharmacist experience with Board Certification.
