Operates extra-corporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient\'s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Scope of Practice includes, but is not limited to: extra-corporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support, ECMO, anticoagulation monitoring, hematologic monitoring, physiological monitoring/analysis, blood gas and chemistry monitoring, induction of targeted temperature management, hemodilution, use of the extra-corporeal circuit for medication administration, and associated documentation. Other duties may include: isolated limb/organ perfusion, electro-physiological analysis, organ preservation, dialysis assistance.

Responsibilities

Prepares for cardiac and non-cardiac procedures. Assesses patient medical status and calculates perfusion requirements (e.g., blood flow, BSA, CI).

Conducts perfusion techniques. Monitors perfusion procedures and patient status to maintain appropriate patient vital signs, flows, temperature, pressure, etc.

Education Maintains CCP status through meetings, inservices and publications. Keeps current with new developments in perfusion technology and cardiac surgery.

Communication and Interaction Works well as a team member, lending assistance when needed.

Competency Checklist or In-service Review ACT

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited cardiopulmonary perfusion program with a master\'s degree or a bachelor\'s degree. Master\'s degree preferred.

Experience: Graduate of an accredited university with a bachelor\'s or master\'s degree. Certified or eligible to be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Licensure: Connecticut State Perfusion License/ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist within one year of hire.

Special Skills: Knowledge of anatomy and cardio-respiratory systems, specialized medical equipment, procedures, and hospital policies. Analytical, organizational and oral/written communication skills.

Additional Information: Board eligible; 2 years experience preferred.
