Position Overview The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in Berkeley. We employ a variety of assignments and a public service experience focused on proactive education, outreach and crime prevention.
Position: Police Officer (5323C) – University Police. This is a 100% full-time, non-exempt career position. The department employs sworn peace officers and civilian staff to address campus public safety needs.
Position Summary
Provide public safety services on campus and on properties owned, controlled, or occupied by the University.
Engage in preventive patrols on foot and by vehicle; respond to calls for service from University personnel and the public.
Make constitutional arrests under the 4th Amendment, prepare documentation, testify in court, conduct investigations, and maintain custody of property.
Ensure security and safety at University public ceremonies and events; maintain custody and disposal of lost and found property.
Candidates with POST basic academy graduation may be hired as lateral entry and sworn in on date of hire.
Responsibilities
Protects university employees, students, and the general public; patrols and safeguards university property; maintains law and order; respond to incidents and take appropriate police action.
Gathers, analyzes, investigates, and prepares written reports on accidents, property damage, crimes, and disturbances; may appear in court as required.
Directs and controls parking regulations and issues traffic citations as needed.
Participates in training and development; performs other duties as assigned.
Works with City of Berkeley police force as required.
Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge in First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lot procedures, general law enforcement, vehicle laws, and use of firearms.
Ability to observe situations analytically and record information accurately; must be a US citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States; must have no felony convictions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with a diverse community; proficient with computer devices and law enforcement technologies.
Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, practices, and trends in the University environment; meet all legal requirements for peace officers under California law and POST.
Education
High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.
Licenses/Certification
Must maintain valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV record.
Completion of basic POST certification or successful completion of the Regular Basic Course within the past 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
Salary & Benefits This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs/week) non-exempt position, paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits. The budgeted salary range is $50.61 (step 1.0) – $61.17 (step 5.0) per hour.
