The AVP will lead the Marketing and Communications unit, which combines the functions of Media Relations, Multimedia, Strategic Marketing, Social Media and Web Development. The AVP will collaboratively build and manage a communication unit that raises awareness of the College and its distinctive place in higher education, which includes a philanthropic mission and being an advisor to other segments of the College. Your Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for leading a collaborative effort to develop and execute a strategic communications and marketing program that enhances the statewide, regional, and national reputation of the College. Assess the communications and marketing needs of the College, including institutional positioning and reputation and brand management. Lead all areas of the Marketing and Communications team to include media relations; news distribution; college-wide marketing and advertising plans; the Berea College Magazine; video production design and photographic services; and content engagement for the College website, official social media and digital platforms. Work collaboratively with the Public Safety Office to develop, manage, and implement crisis communication strategies. Give guidance and offer direction for the communication strategies of the College, such as divisions, centers and auxiliary units, especially the Boone Tavern Hotel and Student Craft to ensure the consistent implementation of College identity and brand standards. Work together with the Vice President for Alumni, Communications and Philanthropy to develop the annual objectives for the MC unit in implementing sound communications strategies and tools to enhance fundraising, to define metrics for those objectives, to devise and implement strategies to meet them, and to review progress and adjust on an annual basis. Implement sound communications strategies and tools to engage other external stakeholders in sustaining the mission of the College, and devise creative new strategies as needed. In support of Berea College’s commitments this position requires student supervision, including scheduling, assigning and approving work performed, with development of students to gain workplace experience. Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of its goals and in maintaining a positive, respectful learning environment for staff, faculty and students. What You’ll Bring:
Education required to ensure success in this position: Bachelor’s Degree in a marketing, communications, or related discipline with Master’s Degree preferred, additional evidence of continuing education and professional association involvement, and an ongoing commitment to integrating best practices. Experience required to ensure success in this position: A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant marketing and communications experience. At least five (5) years of which reflect a strategic leadership role tied to a track record of developing and leading communications and/or marketing teams. Must have demonstrated project-management experience and strong organizational, and time-management skills. Must have excellent interpersonal skills that include strong communication skills in both written and spoken language. Experience with public presentations and use of digital communications is critical. Proven success toward working with and building a high performing team. Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Capacity to embrace and promote an institution with a unique mission and vision as captured in Berea College’s Great Commitments, including experience communicating these missions to external audiences. Experience and capability for both strategic planning and tactical implementation of projects. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines and initiate projects. Intellectual curiosity, openness to scholarly inquiry, commitment to social justice, and willingness to challenge stereotypes. Collaborative leadership to inspire cooperation advising in service of the College’s mission and vision, within the MC unit and with colleagues from other areas of the College. Support for the educational goals of Berea students via involvement in the Labor Program. Ability to collaborate with auxiliary units such as Boone Tavern Hotel, Student Crafts, Admissions, and the College Farm and Forest. Flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to changes in marketing and communications, particularly in social and digital media. Comfort with data-informed processes and using data to provide direction and performance. Aptitude for collaborating with faculty, staff, and students across the College campus and beyond. License, certification, or registration necessary: Valid Driver’s License Physical requirements: Must be capable of traveling independently by car or plane.
