Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. For over 50 years, LSNYC has challenged systemic injustices and provided legal services to help clients meet basic needs related to housing, income, immigration, family, education, health, and more. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country, with staff in neighborhood-based offices across all five boroughs.

Position Overview Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead and grow LSNYC's philanthropic revenue. This senior leadership role is responsible for creating, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of LSNYC\'s development strategy, with a focus on cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors, private foundations, and corporate partners. The CDO reports to the Executive Director and collaborates with the Board of Directors, the Executive Leadership Team, and borough Project Directors to align citywide fundraising with local priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Execution

Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to increase and diversify private revenue streams (major gifts, private foundations, corporate support). Assist with annual revenue budgeting.

Major Gifts & Donor Relations

Lead LSNYC\'s frontline fundraising efforts, cultivate and steward major donors, expand pipelines, and work with Communications to elevate messaging and donor opportunities.

Foundation & Institutional Giving

Grow relationships with private foundations and institutional funders; develop compelling grant proposals and reports with program and finance teams.

Special Events

Plan and execute flagship fundraising events (including Jazz for Justice), manage year-end giving campaigns, and other donor cultivation activities.

Board & Leadership Engagement

Partner with the Executive Director and Board to deepen relationships with funders; serve as a confidential member of LSNYC\'s senior management and coordinate with borough Project Directors on outreach.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

Manage the development team and foster a culture of philanthropy; collaborate with senior management, finance, communications, and program staff.

Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible development experience, including frontline fundraising, major gifts, and foundation/institutional giving.

Proven success in raising significant private funds in a nonprofit setting.

Ability to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies.

Experience managing fundraising events and donor campaigns.

Strong relationship-building skills with donors, board members, and internal stakeholders.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience leading and mentoring a development team.

Commitment to LSNYC\'s mission of advancing equity and justice.

Knowledge of the New York philanthropic and nonprofit landscape is strongly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits LSNYC offers an excellent benefits package and highly competitive public interest salary. Benefits include health, dental, and vision plans, contributions to a 403(b) plan, and generous leave time.

Salary Range $215,000 – $287,000 USD, commensurate with experience.

Work Location This is a hybrid position based in New York City with a minimum of 5 in-office days over each two-week period.
