Description UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) is growing in the diverse areas of professional educational programs, cutting-edge research, and pharmacy services. The role applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and software research and development principles to perform complex distributed computing architectural design, administration, and maintenance. It involves evaluating factors impacting medium to large projects, designing and optimizing storage systems for repositories serving multiple petabytes of data, and supporting HPC and data science projects. It also includes evaluating new hardware/software technologies, resolving complex research and technology issues, managing large-scale storage and backup solutions, and ensuring HIPAA-compliant data handling where required. The position designs and manages networking infrastructure to connect servers, storage, compute systems, and virtual machines, and develops/configures management infrastructure and documentation for CCMS systems. It may involve leading a team and giving technical presentations at meetings, conferences, and committees. It may represent the organization in national/international settings and assists in selecting new technologies for HPC, data science, and CI projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Nine years of related experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related area plus five years of related experience/training.
Advanced knowledge of HPC / data science / CI.
Highly advanced skills in one or more of: HPC hardware and software performance analysis, deployment of HPC/data science/CI applications and tools at large scale.
Experience designing/operating petabyte-scale data redundancy and backup systems to ensure data protection and service availability.
Experience designing/maintaining storage and core service infrastructure for large-scale data systems and HPC algorithms on tens of thousands of datasets.
Experience in a complex computing/data/CI environment with tools such as DNS, DHCP, NFS, SSH, Puppet/Ansible, security logging, file systems (e.g., ZFS and TrueNAS), etc.
Knowledge of Linux and macOS operating systems, database conventions/tools, and system utilities.
Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences at various levels; proven leadership and teamwork.
Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects; demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
Experience prioritizing needs and developing solutions for complex technical/research demands.
Advanced experience in optimizing and benchmarking HPC performance and related power modeling.
Experience training others to use computing clusters and applications.
Strong knowledge of tools/technologies including: Puppet/Ansible, Proxmox, Torque, Slurm, Apache, Tomcat, vsftpd, MySQL, Java, Python, GitHub, C/C++, Perl, SQL, Postgres, and shell programming.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to initiate research proposals and obtain funding.
Experience in complex computational/large-scale storage environments with domain science applications, including biological mass spectrometry (proteomics, metabolomics, etc.).

Pay Transparency and Additional Information Pay transparency: Annual Full Pay Range:
$119,400 - $230,800
(prorated if appointment is less than 100%). Hourly equivalent:
$57.18 - $110.54 .
Operations may require vaccination compliance per UC policies and applicable directives. Life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person assessment where applicable.
