Overview

The Psychiatrist works under general supervision to provide psychiatric evaluations for individuals referred by the Richland County Probate Court to determine if a patient has a mental illness requiring Judicial Commitment to inpatient or outpatient care. The role involves reviewing records, preparing court submission reports, and providing expert testimony as scheduled. Occasional emergency evaluations at the Columbia Area Emergency Services clinic may be needed. The Office of Mental Health's mission

is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina. Responsibilities

Provide designated examinations of patients referred by Probate Court for evaluation of possible Judicial Commitment; review records and prepare reports for Court submission. Provide testimony to Probate Court on patients evaluated in designated examinations. Provide psychiatric services including evaluation and emergency management of adult patients using evidence-based treatment modalities and pharmacotherapy as indicated. Attend Medical Staff meetings as scheduled. Comply with the Office of Mental Health Compliance Plan and all legal responsibilities and requirements. Qualifications

Licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. Completion of a four-year residency in psychiatry and two years of direct patient care experience. Board certified/Board eligible in general/adult psychiatry. Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus. Post hire, must: familiarity with judicial commitment forms; be comfortable providing expert testimony to the Court; have general computer skills and ability to produce typed reports.
