This position is responsible for evaluating and diagnosing problems relating to speech, language, and communication disorders. The successful candidate will participate in diagnostic assessment and in making treatment recommendations for children and youth with diverse disabilities, many of whom have co-existent mental health conditions. This clinician is responsible for evaluating and diagnosing complex problems relating to speech, language, communication. Responsible for formulating and recommending a plan, which may include therapy for the diagnosed problems, referrals for further consultations, extended speech and language evaluations, or suggestions for a home training program in order to achieve a maximum level of functional independence. This position will work in an outpatient setting. This position is also responsible for documenting all age-appropriate patient care appropriately in the medical record to comply with the policies and procedures of the department and JCAHO requirements. Also responsible for supervision of other staff clinicians. Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluates and/or screens complex patients referred to Speech and Language Pathology with a high degree of professional competency & efficiency while delivering competent care to patients across ages from infancy to adulthood. Based on behavioral observations, case history, and standardized test results, evaluates patient status and makes diagnoses using professional standards and clinical judgement. Makes treatment recommendations which may include therapy, referrals, extended evaluations, or home training program suggestions. Prepares complete written reports of evaluations and progress of individual cases. Consults with clients, patients, and caregivers concerning recommendations and necessary carryover programs; evaluates progress to ascertain effectiveness of home programs. Determines goals, dismissal criteria, and appropriate materials to enhance understanding of speech, language, and/or swallowing disorders. Chooses appropriate tests and rehabilitation services and provides high quality patient care. Communicates with medical personnel regarding type, extent, and prognosis of speech and/or language disorders in relation to treatments. Coordinates follow-up procedures and participates in interdisciplinary and family conferences to coordinate services. Completes documentation including evaluation reports, progress notes, reassessments, and discharge summaries; complies with insurance requirements. Coordinates Graduate Student Internship program in Speech-Language Pathology; defines criteria, procedures, and caseloads and evaluates clinical skills. Schedules and provides in-service training for professionals and groups on speech/language and swallowing disorders in infants and children. Oversees day-to-day operations for the Speech and Language Program, including scheduling, hiring, and training; conducts annual performance evaluations of staff. Maintains current knowledge in the field and local patient care programs; may participate in research or related bookkeeping duties as required. Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Speech Therapist License Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Five (5) years of experience in Speech-Language Pathology Preferred Qualifications
Six (6) years of experience including two (2) years with head-injured patients Training and experience as a Pediatric Dysphagia Specialist Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, and transferring of patients Manual dexterity for testing and treatment techniques; ability to operate computer systems Ability to see computer screens and assess patient status; able to visually assess and audibly evaluate patient complaints Skills & Abilities
Broad knowledge in diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, cognitive, communicative, and swallowing disorders Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and independent work capabilities; organized and reliable Ability to work in busy settings and adapt to changes; effective in multidisciplinary environments Proficiency in English language communication; ability to assess needs across age populations Effective time management to maintain department productivity and quality patient care Employment details
