Overview

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Licensure: Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English Additional Requirement: Position requires that the selectee be Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology Please include appropriate documentation with your application packet to be considered Preferred Experience: Reference: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/ Physical Requirements: Physical Standards/Requirements: See VA Handbook 5005 - Part III - Chapter 2 - paragraph 7 - and VA Handbook 5019 - Occupational Health Services All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position The selected candidate should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position Moderate lifting - 15-44 pounds straight pulling (4 hours) pushing (4 hours) reaching above shoulder use of fingers both hands required walking (2 hours);standing (7 hours) kneeling (1 hour) repeated bending (4 hours) both legs required near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4 far-vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other ability to distinguish basic colors hearing (aid permitted) mental and emotional stability required Active listening - reading - observing and evaluating verbal and nonverbal behavior - walking - speaking - writing reports - writing policies and procedures - writing clinical notes - using office equipment such as computers - telephones - fax machines - photocopy machines and driving. Responsibilities

Performs major duties including but not limited to: linking clinical improvements to operation efficiency for the service Manages intensity and breadth of program to address complex problems through planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating all programs affecting the interdisciplinary service and health care delivery Formulates long- and short-range goals and objectives; plans and programs for the service Coordinates with the Chief of Staff and facility management to align Medical Center and VISN objectives Collaborates with executive leadership, managerial and clinical leaders in formulating local Medical Center policy and resource planning Involves union leadership in pre-decision formulation of policies and organizational changes that affect service members Monitors outcomes and works with Medical Center Management to meet program goals Identifies needs and proposes funding requests; maintains quality control programs; ensures quality of care and service Develops and implements interdisciplinary service policies and administrative activities to ensure clinical program effectiveness Coordinates interdisciplinary service activities with other services and clinics to ensure quality patient care Defines requirements, functions, and scope of the service to other services Collaborates with service management and interdisciplinary teams on new or revised initiatives Participates in multidisciplinary meetings regularly Recommends staffing levels to provide patient care and services Performs other duties as assigned This position carries the possibility of a joint faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico Applicants must have appropriate credentials for a faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level or higher at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00am - 4:30pm MT Benefits and Additional Information
