Overview

Rail Technical Trainer position with King County Metro Transit’s Rail Division. Train the light rail workforce, onboarding and developing Rail employees, and supporting Rail’s Culture of Care and Operational Excellence priorities. The Technical Training team develops, implements, and facilitates training courses for various trades and job classifications at Link Light Rail. Trainers may focus on operations, vehicle maintenance, track & ROW maintenance, power, signals, SCADA, facilities maintenance, business and administration, onboarding and general training, and will typically cross-train in multiple areas. Training occurs in both classroom and hands-on settings, with evaluation of student progress throughout the program. Trainers coordinate with Rail management to ensure safety and quality of services per standards, best practices, and rules. Responsibilities

Participate in all aspects of rail training, including rail operations, maintenance, and facilities training programs. Support Rail’s strategic priorities of Culture of Care and Operational Excellence by delivering high-quality technical training to new and current employees. Onboard, support, and train diverse employees with varied backgrounds and experiences. Develop, implement, and conduct training (curriculum, lesson plans, hands-on training and demonstration, training materials, and assessments) for rail employees and others as assigned, ensuring alignment with standards and safety requirements: Maintain up-to-date training content. Prepare and maintain training aids, charts, visual aids, equipment simulators, mock-ups, and other materials. Ensure availability of classroom space and equipment for training programs. Conduct initial, refresher, and retraining sessions as needed. Deliver technical and compliance training as required. Assess learners, monitor progress, and conduct formal evaluations of trainees, including: Provide progress evaluations and performance counseling. Ensure trainees comply with Link Light Rail governing documents and policies. Recommend and implement support strategies for trainees who are not meeting standards. Evaluate and recommend termination of trainees who do not meet standards when appropriate. Act as a designated examiner in testing and certification of rail vehicle operators and other rail positions. Maintain complete and accurate training documentation, including attendance, assessments, completions, and trainee information; adhere to record retention requirements. Support emerging training needs of the division, including: Provide customized training as needed. Assist in training other areas on a project basis. Evaluate new equipment and changes to incorporate into training curricula. Participate in testing, certification, and opening of new rail extensions and new rail cars; participate in audits, emergency drills, and simulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of training processes, safety principles, Metro rules, policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Research and prepare technical and administrative reports to support division needs. Operate rail vehicles and perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Experience as a trainer and/or educator of adults and two years of work experience in a transportation, transit, or industrial environment, or an equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required skills and abilities. Note: for the Operations-focused training role, at least one year of experience as a light rail operator is required. Desirable Qualifications

Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience developing, evaluating, and revising training materials. Experience developing policies, procedures, rules, and reports. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Knowledge of trainee assessment and performance evaluation, including feedback and coaching. Problem solving, analysis, and evaluation skills to improve efficiency and quality. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and apply equitable training practices. For Operations training: Holds a Link Light Rail Mainline Rail Card and has been a qualified Link Light Rail operator for at least one year. Knowledge of or ability to learn state and federal rail operation, maintenance, safety rules and regulations. Ability to learn and use database systems for training records and materials. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook proficiency. Necessary Special Requirements

Valid Washington state driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire). Ability to obtain and maintain a Link Rail Operator card (for Operations training). Working Conditions

Climb stairs and board rail on elevated guideways. Sit for extended periods. Lift or pull up to 30 pounds. Perform repetitive movements to operate equipment. Work independently with minimal breaks. Application & Selection Process

Full time, typically 40 hours per week. Exempt from FLSA and not eligible for overtime. Telework/remote work may be available. Safety Sensitive
