Location:Detroit, Lansing, or Grand Rapids, MI
With the guidance of the Board and Managing Director, the HR Director will provide support to BOOM partners and staff to ensure policies, procedures, and personnel management are aligned with our values and with best HR practices and keep BOOM in compliance with employment laws and regulations. The Human Resource Director will lead the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department, which includes but is not limited to: onboarding/offboarding of staff, including training and exit interviews, benefits administration and management, payroll, and enforcement of organizational policies and practices. This position requires a collaborative, innovative, organized, flexible, empathetic HR professional with outstanding communication and management skills to support a network of Michigan-based organizations and entities to leverage, scale and innovate their work for transformative social change.
This position is being offered as a full-time exempt position. Preference for Michigan-based staff in Detroit, Lansing or Grand Rapids. Reliable internet access is required.
Primary Responsibilities
Oversees HR Department including supervision of HR staff, management of HR team workplans, and implementation of HR strategic goals. Implements new hire onboarding, including the processing of tax paperwork and associated regulatory reporting. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance. Updates employee handbooks and organizational policies to ensure compliance with current employment law and alignment with organizational values. Oversees the processing of payroll. Manages benefit plans, and administration. Leads annual open enrollment process. Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and sensitive matters to the Managing Director and/or Board of Directors. Performs other routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource trainings and programs. Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in, human resources and employment law. Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory trainings and work assessments. Oversees staff trainings and staff development planning. Supports partner organization Directors in implementing new policies and procedures and navigating complex HR situations. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Requirements
As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of social, economic and racial justice and be driven by the mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience within non-profit organizations. Experience working within a “values-driven” organization is strongly preferred. Additional requirements are: Cultural competence, commitment to racial and economic justice and equity, and experience working within diverse communities and staff. At least five years of human resource administration, non-profit management, or operations experience is required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred. Knowledge of federal and state labor laws, equal employment practices, and anti-discrimination Laws. Working knowledge of different fiscal and legal entities (including 501c3, 501c4, PAC, LLC). Excellent time management skills, a self-starter with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Ability to understand, interpret, develop and communicate policies and procedures. Effective, thoughtful and compassionate written and verbal communication skills; be able to adapt communication to different audiences and situations; be able to develop clear and concise written communication. Flexible, values-driven individual with a good sense of humor. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Takes initiative. Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and empathy. Proficient with Google Suite; Generally comfortable with tech platforms. Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn and navigate the organizations systems, including GoCo, Airtable, and Freshdesk. Salary & Benefits

Founded by leaders from 482Forward, the Michigan Education Justice Coalition and the Urban Core Collective, BOOM serves as a backoffice hub to meet the growing needs of base building organizations, allowing them to focus on programmatic and organizing priorities.
