Overview

Clinical Instructor - Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (250002NY). The CICU provides subspecialty care for critically ill pediatric patients with congenital, acquired cardiovascular or related diseases. The 26-bed unit uses the latest technology in a family-friendly environment with a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving outcomes through innovation and research. The CICU staff includes an integrated cardiac team with sub-specialists available, and a unit-based team including a pharmacist, respiratory therapist, social worker, nurses, and physicians from anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery. Children’s National Hospital is home to ECMO services for children (ELSO center of excellence) and has VAD and heart transplant programs. All nursing practice is based on legal scopes of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, CNMC policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires RNs to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. CNMC supports RN relationships within the community and directs clinical orientation for nursing clinical fellows. The role includes a hands-on direct care and teaching function with patients, families and nursing clinical fellows, and direct supervision of nursing clinical fellows. Qualifications

Minimum Education

Functional Accountabilities Discuss orientation expectations with orientee, Clinical Instructor, Advanced Practice Specialist and Staff Development Specialist role related to orientation and ongoing education Review orientee learning needs and develop an individualized education plan; communicate outcomes to all involved Use teaching methods that facilitate education using adult learning principles Participate in competency training for Unit Identify patient and family educational needs with orientees Education Discuss role expectations with orientee, Clinical Instructor, Advanced Practice Specialist and Staff Development Specialist role related to orientation and ongoing education Review orientee learning needs and develop an individualized education plan; communicate orientation outcomes to all involved Use teaching methods that facilitate education using adult learning principles Participate in competency training for Unit Identify patient and family educational needs with orientees Clinical Instruction Provide direct patient care in area of specialty independently or as a preceptor Identify weekly clinical experience goals with each orientee in collaboration with Manager, Coordinator, Advanced Practice Specialist, and/or Staff Development Specialist; plan appropriate assignments and learning experiences Plan patient care assignments one day ahead; communicate with manager and charge nurse Assign orientee to individual or dual experiences with defined role expectations and objectives Develop follow-up activities after patient care experiences Arrange for other clinical experiences (e.g., clinics, ORs, cath lab) as appropriate for fellows Patient Care Instruction Plan patient and family education in collaboration with orientee and nursing staff; tailor teaching methods to content and family preferences Plan patient and family discharge needs with orientee, case manager, nursing staff and physicians Prepare orientee for patient care assignments by reviewing diagnosis, status, management plan, and nursing care; discuss pathophysiology and nursing care, and explain related diagnostics Assist orientee in organizing patient care priorities and encourage critical thinking Facilitate post-clinical conference discussions and document orientee competency achievement Contribute to didactic and lab teaching; model professional practice and leadership Provide direct patient care with orientee: teach patients and families and implement discharge activities as appropriate Safety Speak up about unsafe behavior or performance Validate information needed for decision making and documentation Pause to resolve uncertainties Communicate clearly and timely, both verbal and written Promote safety for patients, families, visitors and staff Practice Stop, Think, Act and Review to self-check behavior Location and Job Details
