Responsibilities
Plan, organize, direct and coordinate first response to emergency and/or maintenance calls by electrical staff and FM Building Operations personnel for UC San Diego facilities and utilities located on the Main Campus and other sites (SIO, Mount Soledad, MarFac Nimitz, Camp Elliott). Provide 24/7/365 coverage. Oversee installation, modification, maintenance and overhaul of electrical systems including power distribution, motors, variable frequency drives, and electrical systems for specialized equipment (e.g., autoclaves, sea water life support systems, emergency generators, chillers, boilers, air handlers, heat exchangers). Oversee building lighting systems (indoor and outdoor), emergency egress lighting, street and signal lighting, and lighting control systems (LED, ballasts, inverters, etc.). Prioritize schedules and supervise campus-wide electrical system modifications, repairs, and physical reconfiguration; manage preventive and planned maintenance programs; ensure continuity of service with minimal interruptions. Provide guidance to the electrical team for prioritization, urgent job planning, and scheduled work; participate in budgeting, cost monitoring, and procurement processes; assist in FM Electric shop annual budgeting. Interact with FM management and campus clients to resolve problems and ensure high-value service; supervise all building electrical activities and oversee more complex maintenance projects as needed. Develop and implement regular security and maintenance schedules and inspections; participate in the design, creation, and reporting of building maintenance, call center, and other operational processes; monitor policies and procedures related to facility maintenance and customer service. Make critical decisions to maintain campus operations during emergencies involving utility disruptions; recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff; recommend hiring, promotions, salary actions, terminations and performance management.
Qualifications
Graduation from college with a major in engineering, business administration, architecture or related field with progressively responsible experience in facilities operations management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Solid knowledge of facilities maintenance policies, safety, emergency preparedness, and customer service; experience managing maintenance and repair operations including budgeting, planning, and supervision of skilled trades and facilities professionals. Supervisory experience including hiring, promotions, classifications, disciplinary actions, and performance evaluations. Experience supervising facility maintenance and improvements, including electrical and building systems related to sea water pumping, chillers, HVAC control, utility distribution, and planned maintenance programs; ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams. Experience in higher education, research, and/or healthcare environments preferred. Experience generating and presenting work status reports; demonstrated long- and short-range planning for maintenance and renovation of buildings and systems. Experience monitoring work orders and purchase requisitions; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to manage diverse stakeholders across the University community; strong problem solving, leadership, and quality control capabilities. Proficiency with software such as MS Outlook, Excel, Access, FileMaker Pro, Oracle, Online Timekeeping, Internet Explorer, and MAXIMO or similar CMMS.
Special Conditions
Must be able to work flexible shifts to manage a 7-day, 24-hour maintenance program. DOJ, FBI, and DMV background checks required prior to hire. Must hold a California driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record; may enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice program. Ability to work in morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human/animal bodies may be exposed. May work in areas near labs with bio-hazardous substances.
Pay Transparency
Annual Full Pay Range: $97,200 - $182,000 (will be prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $46.55 - $87.16.
Factors in determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business needs. The posted annual full pay range may be broader than the amount paid due to internal equity, budget, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
