Our Work: The Department of Ob/Gyn improves the health of women and people of all genders through innovative and compassionate care, education, advocacy, and discovery. Our faculty practices medicine in world-class hospitals and are internationally recognized for the medical, surgical, and reproductive Obstetric and Gynecologic care they provide to their patients. Our faculty is committed to the highest level of basic and clinical research in Obstetric and Gynecologic science, and our staff is dedicated to providing the support and structure to facilitate our departments success. We are focused on innovative translational medicine; bringing scientific results from the bench to the bedside. As one of 19 Clinical departments and 12 Basic Science departments within the School of Medicine (SoM), Ob/Gyn has a total annual budget of $58 million, over 200 faculty and staff, and trainees. The DFA must be an experienced leader with a strong ability to strategically and tactically manage Ob/Gyns finance and administrative operations. They must understand a multitude of functional areas while also demonstrating leadership, emotional intelligence, strong communication skills and conflict resolution abilities. They must be mission-driven to support the work of the department, and its faculty, staff, and trainees with demonstrated values of empathy, compassion, honesty, and integrity, and effectively partner with key stakeholders across the Stanford School of Medicine and affiliated hospitals. Reporting Relationships: The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) reports primarily to the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Associate Dean/Chief Financial Officer for the School of Medicine. The DFA partners with the Chair and other faculty and staff to manage the financial and administrative areas of the department, including clinical revenue and productivity management, hospital relationships, grant management, faculty and academic affairs, student affairs, external relations, and human resources. The DFA also works on strategic planning, grant portfolio development, educational programs, and process excellence. The DFA collaborates with the Associate Dean/Chief Financial Officer, peers, and cross-functional teams to support the SoM’s operations. Job Summary Strategic and Operational Planning: Works with the chair and other leadership on strategic planning and projects. Develops, administers, and communicates strategic and operational plans to support the department and school’s vision, mission, values and strategic plan. Anticipates financial investment and staff capabilities to meet requirements. Develops financial and operational plans for new departmental initiatives, focusing on execution and scaling, in partnership with the Ob/Gyn Chair, Associate Dean/CFO, hospital leadership, and direct and indirect reports. Partners with faculty and staff leadership on departmental affairs and advocates for the unit’s needs and goals to internal and external parties. Works with the Chair, Deans Office, and hospital leadership regarding resources to support faculty activities and interests. Financial Management: Ensure the financial success of the organization. Oversee the finances across all sources for the annual budget cycle, including developing, monitoring, analyzing, forecasting and reporting. Allocate resources appropriately, especially for large-scale investments. Recommend and develop strategies for cost containment, investments, and growth management. Oversee the annual budget process with the Associate Director of Finance and leadership. Advise on funds flow between SHC, SMCH, and the department, ensuring faculty are paid appropriately. Develop specialized agreements as necessary. Represent unit needs in research, clinical and service facilities; negotiate on behalf of the unit with school and hospital administration. Coordinate with hospital budgeting and negotiate funding for programmatic needs; partner with hospital leadership on planning, satisfaction and goals. People Management and Leadership: Hire and retain staff, clarify roles, coach, ensure training, and develop direct reports. Direct staff to achieve department goals. May oversee staff in student, fellow, residency, and graduate program administration. Represent the department on committees and with groups as needed. Foster collaboration with leadership across the School, health system, and university, including diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives. Operations Management and Leadership: Direct department operations, evaluate processes, and ensure productivity and resource allocation. Ensure policy compliance and guide HR policies. Manage internal policy development for programs and operations. Recommend changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety, finance, technology, and administrative functions. Minimum Required Education And Experience : Masters degree (MBA, Public Health, Health Care Informatics or related field) or combination of education and relevant experience. Five years of progressively responsible managerial experience, including financial and budget preparation. Three years of supervisory experience. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities : Leading (Navigation and Communication). Demonstrated ability to lead administrative teams, build partnerships with faculty and leadership, work with diverse groups, communicate change effectively, and exhibit people-focused leadership. Planning (Vision, Mission, and Strategy). Ability to evaluate environment, craft strategic responses, and develop tactical/operational policies. Organizing (Organizational Design and Culture). Foster collaboration, develop structures for hybrid/remote work. Controlling (Organizational Excellence). Measure performance, manage staff, improve processes, and manage financial risk. Job Knowledge (Functional and Technical Expertise). Subject matter expert in business, management, accounting, budget, forecasting, contracts and grants; articulate financial implications clearly; understand clinical, research, and education aspects of Ob/Gyn. Desired Skills : Experience with RVU-based costing, NIH and NIAID portfolios, Pre-Award and Post-Award management, and operations/finance related to faculty compensation and time allocation. The expected pay range for this position is $187,435 - $287,963 per annum/hour.
