This Position reports to: Senior Engineering Manager For this position, we are open to candidates being full remote or working out of our Houston, TX or Lake Mary, FL offices. This role contributes to the Electrification Distribution Solutions group in the United States.
Your role and responsibilities
As the Sr. Project Engineer - Protection & Control, you will be responsible for designing and executing the protection and control engineering components of projects and ensuring that all related activities are performed in accordance with ABB policy, contractual agreements, quality standards, HSE requirements, financial targets, and schedule commitments. You will also perform engineering analysis and troubleshooting for automation, control, and protection in power systems. You will approach customers with integrity and respect for long-lasting relationships, using your experience to solve problems and achieve objectives per business metrics. Key accountability: Engineering & Technical Execution:
Lead protection and control engineering design for MV/LV systems, including relay selection, logic implementation, IEC61850 configuration, documentation, and testing support (FAT/SAT). Customer & Sales Engagement:
Provide presales technical support, develop proof-of-concept demos, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to meet customer requirements. Process Improvement & Risk Management:
Drive continuous improvement, manage change processes, and assess project risks to ensure timely and quality delivery of engineering solutions. Communication & Collaboration:
Effectively communicate technical concepts across teams and levels, coordinate engineering tasks, and contribute to planning and control of protection and control architectures.
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree with 12 years of relevant experience strongly preferred. Masters Degree preferred. Candidates with no degree and commensurate experience will also be considered. Minimum of 8 years of experience in power systems design, testing, and commissioning regarding protection and control. Strong technical background and knowledge of protection and control systems for LV / MV and HV power systems. Familiar with power system architectures, troubleshooting tools for protection systems, and power systems analysis. Proven experience with IEC 61850 based substation automation schemes. Experience with other protective relay communication protocols including DNP & Modbus is highly desirable. Customer focused. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to travel up to 40%.
