Overview

Serves as section charge person, developing work schedule and apportioning daily tasks to other cytology staff. Serves as section technical resource to GH staff and clients, providing assistance and instruction as needed. Provides input to manager for cytotechnologist and cyto technician performance appraisals. Assists the Director with all aspects of the Quality Assurance program including statistical collection, case reviews, focused audits, on-going audits and problem resolution with appropriate documentation. Prepares periodic quality reports for the section. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality within the section. Prepares the section for on-going laboratory inspections and insures all accreditation criteria are maintained. Implements section technical changes by developing and maintaining procedures, utilizing spreadsheets and word-processing applications as appropriate. Serves as a resource for LIS on the functionality of the cytology applications, assisting in upgrades and troubleshooting as needed. Performs all of the essential duties of a cytotechnologist as needed EEO/AA/Disability/Veteran
Responsibilities
Directs section operations 24/7; manages section in efficient, cost effective manner with appropriate materials management; ensures appropriate test turn around time; ensures accurate and timely billing; schedules section staff as appropriate.
Ensures that all section work is performed within the highest standards of quality and patient safety; monitors the performance of all proficiency tests; produces appropriate QA reports and monitors
Technical functions: maintains proficiency in all section procedures; resolves technical and equipment problems, performs and directs special procedures as necessary
Administrative: Develops and maintains appropriate procedures for all section functions; ensures compliance with all CAP, CT and NY requirements; continually inspection ready; keeps section employees informed of all organizational and departmental policies; helps all section personnel to achieve their fullest potential, providing training and setting goals as needed; evaluates new equipment as needed.
Qualifications EDUCATION
Baccalaureate degree in Cytotechnology or an equivalent science including one year of cytology training and at least three years of experience as a cytotechnologist and fulfill the requirements of the State of Connecticut for general supervisors, certification in cytotechnology by a national organization such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology
EXPERIENCE
At least three years of experience as a cytotechnologist and fulfill the requirements of the State of Connecticut for general supervisors
LICENSURE
ASCP certification
SPECIAL SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to work closely with staff and provide assistance to Administrative Director, Director of Pathology, Pathologists and Medical Staff as needed. Must demonstrate assertive and creative problem solving ability by identifying problem areas affecting customer/patient issues and departmental quality and efficiency.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Lifting of medium weight objects. Close machine work and the use of sharp knives and instruments. Intense concentration and attention to detail for most of the day.
