Overview The James A. Haley Veterans Hospital Endocrinology Section is seeking a team player and dynamic board-certified Endocrinologist for a full-time position. Ideal candidates are US citizens who are committed to quality patient care, academic medicine, and team collaboration in a growing VA academic hospital environment.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed

License and Registration: Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program - Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism - leading to eligibility for board certification

Board Certification: Internal Medicine: Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health

Physical capabilities: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.), light carrying (15 lbs and under), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking up to 2 hours, standing up to 2 hours, kneeling up to 1 hour, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near/far vision, depth perception, color vision, and hearing (aid permitted)

Other: emotional stability, mental stability, ability to work closely with others and also work independently

Duties

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

EDRP authorized: Former EDRP participants may be ineligible to apply for incentive.

Responsibilities include providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient endocrinology care with teaching opportunities for USF endocrinology fellows and internal medicine residents.

Engage in duties such as diagnosing, treating, and managing endocrine disorders (e.g., diabetes, thyroid abnormalities, hypertension, infertility, cholesterol disorders, and endocrine-related cancers).

Perform procedures such as ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) thyroid biopsies as needed (experience preferred).

Conduct patient examinations, review medical histories, discuss diagnoses, and advise on medications, lifestyle changes, and preventive measures.

Engage in teaching activities with USF endocrinology fellows and IM residents, including supervision during outpatient clinics, inpatient consult rotations, and academic sessions.

Participate in follow-up appointments, monitor patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and maintain timely records.

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (5 full-time and 2 part-time endocrinologists, diabetes educators, care managers, ambulatory/primary care staff).

Provide on-call coverage, including nights and weekends as required (schedules determined by supervisor and facility needs).

Work Schedule: 8-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and on-call duties. Schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor; may vary based on facility/patient care needs.
