Responsibilities The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN records patients\' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests, analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatments and medications, and assists with follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, including activities such as administering medications (with careful dosage checks and interactions), managing IV lines, administering therapies, observing and documenting patient status, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hires and students, and helps complete tasks to achieve competency. The RN maintains ongoing knowledge of nursing management and care of patient problems, aims to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes, and promotes a healthy work environment. Nursing practices are theory-based and evidence-based, utilizing a Shared Governance model for decision-making.
All RN staff with direct responsibility for stroke care must have knowledge of:
Stroke symptoms and warning signs
Protocols and pathways for identifying, evaluating, and managing stroke patients
NIHSS
Stroke Alert activation and protocol
Stroke quality indicators
Educational materials and community resources for stroke patients
Educational requirements
Stroke Center website resources
Essential Functions
Collect health data in a systematic and ongoing manner, prioritize data collection based on the patient’s condition, and involve the family. Analyze assessment data to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise a patient care plan that is family-centered and culturally relevant.
Identify expected outcomes and develop plans of care that are individualized, evidence-based, and ensure continuity of care.
Implement interventions in the plan of care, initiate treatments and emergency measures as appropriate, and provide holistic nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs.
Evaluate progress toward outcomes, document observations and interventions, monitor data, and ensure quality and effectiveness of the care plan to maintain high-quality, cost-effective care.
Evaluate personal nursing practice against professional standards and regulations; maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
Integrate ethical principles and enhance knowledge of culture and diversity; collaborate with others in nursing development and with the multidisciplinary team to deliver patient care.
Develop and evaluate standards of care that are evidence-based; identify and implement changes in nursing practice using evidence-based approaches and research to improve practice and patient outcomes.
Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently.
Education
Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) - Preferred
All Diploma and ADN hires must complete BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 10 years RN experience (direct or indirect) - Required
Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing; stroke-specific education requirements apply prior to start for staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients
Experience
>10 months med-surg or acute specialty setting - Required
1 year RN experience for all Float Positions - Required
Licenses and Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona or a compact state upon hire - Required
National certification for unit-specific patient population - Preferred
