SGOSS - Governors for Schools
Moulton College is a dynamic and ambitious land-based specialist college located in the heart of Northamptonshire. As the only land-based further education provider within a 40-mile radius, it delivers high-quality vocational and technical education to the region with a strong focus on sustainability, green technologies, and practical skills development. The College features one of the UK's largest connected college farms and more than 100 buildings across a substantial estate. The College supports over 3,200 learners across a wide range of pathways, including approximately 2,200 16–19-year-olds, 1,000 part-time adult learners, 100 higher education students, and a growing number of apprentices. It employs around 300 full-time equivalent staff and has an annual turnover of £30 million. The College is rated Good by Ofsted, including its residential provision, and is continuing its upward trajectory following the lifting of a Financial Notice to Improve.
Moulton’s strength lies in its scale and land-based specialism, with a commitment to vocational excellence and future-focused skills. Guided by a Board-led vision for a greener and more sustainable future, the College is well positioned to meet evolving local and regional economy needs. Key areas of focus include agriculture, construction, land management, animal science, sport, and business. This is a rewarding opportunity to help shape the future of a college that is stable, ambitious, and ready for its next stage of development. The successful candidate will join Moulton at a pivotal moment, contributing to a long-term strategic vision that positions the College as a destination of choice for land-based and technical education. Moulton is known for inspiring a deep sense of commitment and pride among those who become part of its community. This role is for a bold and innovative leader who is ready to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the College and all those it serves. Role: Chair of the Corporation
Moulton College is seeking to appoint a new Chair of the Corporation to lead the Board through a pivotal period of strategic growth and transformation. This is a high-impact governance role for an experienced leader with the vision, resilience, and financial acumen to guide the College into its next chapter. The College is currently redrafting its Strategic Plan to 2030, setting a clear course to long-term success. The incoming Chair will shape and oversee this vision, ensuring accountability through clear KPIs and strong strategic leadership with an excellent student experience at its heart. The appointment comes at an exciting time as Moulton has emerged from stabilisation and is entering a phase of strategic expansion. The new Chair will lead a revitalised and forward-thinking Board, with direct responsibility for both the Principal and Head of Governance, and provide robust challenge and support to the senior team. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned non-executive with experience chairing boards or committees, a passion for excellence for every Moulton student, and a proven record of strategic leadership and financial literacy. Experience in regulated sectors such as the NHS, local government, or other public bodies would be welcome but not essential. Knowledge of land-based industries, education, infrastructure, estates, or sustainability would be particularly valuable, as would familiarity with the FE sector and the East Midlands economy. A comprehensive induction and training programme is provided, including support from the Association of Colleges and the Education and Training Foundation. New governors are offered a buddy system and structured onboarding, with early engagement opportunities such as meetings with key staff, campus tours, and observation of Board activity. This is a rare opportunity for a strategic and forward-thinking leader to shape the future of a well-established and ambitious college. The Chair will help ensure Moulton continues to grow, adapt, and thrive, positioning it as a destination of choice for land-based and technical education in the coming years, and guiding a recently restructured curriculum management team to deliver a high-performing college with leadership and management development. Interviews are expected in late November, with a recommendation to the Board in December. Governors typically commit around two days per month to their role, including meeting preparation, committee participation, on-site engagement, and strategic discussions. The College operates a hybrid governance model with several online committee meetings and in-person Full Corporation meetings and key events. For the Chair, there is an expectation to be on-site at least once a month to provide visible leadership and stay closely connected with the College community. In addition to chairing the Search & Governance Committee, the Chair sits on the Curriculum, Quality & Standards, and Finance & Resources Committees and plays a key role in board development, succession planning, and fostering an inclusive governance culture. The annual governance calendar includes approximately: five Full Corporation meetings in person; regular Finance & Resources Committee meetings (mostly online in the early evening); Curriculum & Quality, Audit, and HE Sub-Committee meetings (typically late afternoons); bi-annual Search & Governance and Remuneration Committee meetings; two Governor Development Sessions per year; and strategic development sessions for 2025/26 to inform planning. Meeting times vary, with afternoons and early evenings being most common and some daytime meetings for strategic planning and development. Upcoming Corporation meetings are scheduled for: 9 October 2025, 6 November 2025, 11 December 2025, 19 March 2026, and 2 July 2026. Benefits and information
Volunteering on a College Corporation board is a meaningful way to shape learners’ lives and strengthen education in your community. You will play a vital role in setting strategic direction and holding executive leaders to account, ensuring the College delivers the best outcomes. This is a great opportunity to support your career development and give back to education. Governors work together as a board to provide strategic leadership, ensuring the College Corporation or company is legally compliant, financially sustainable, and delivers value for public funds. The principal regulator of FE and Sixth-Form College corporations is the Secretary of State for Education; the Department for Education (DfE) supports governance through the FE Commissioner and National Leaders of Governance for FE.
