Overview Director, Packaging Shipping Systems (Logistics and Distribution Technology). Reporting to the Director Packaging Distribution, Components and Systems COE, this role provides subject matter expert technical support for distribution and logistics of human health Drug Substance, Drug Product and Finished Goods globally. The Packaging Technical Operations organization aims to be an industry leader in problem-solving, delivering robust and pragmatic technical solutions to accelerate product commercialization and ensure an uninterrupted, compliant supply. The Director will shape technical capabilities and the strategic direction for a global, cross-modality technical team, with deep technical expertise, strong problem-solving, strategic acumen, and leadership skills.

The Director will lead a team of technical experts providing Logistics and Distribution Technology Center of Excellence support to the enterprise. Responsibilities include supporting internal and external manufacturing sites and third-party logistics providers, guiding distribution qualification activities (including shock and vibration and thermal protection system testing and qualification), and leading qualification of complex systems. The role also involves characterizing real-world distribution experiences to develop standard work for distribution-related characterization across packaging platforms and protective packaging designs.

The candidate will build inclusive, collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders (packaging, 3rd party logistics sites, supply chain, technology teams, regulatory and project leaders) and will make informed cost/benefit decisions based on inputs, outcomes, risks, and prioritization.

Essential Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Provide subject matter expertise and ensure scientific rigor, technical problem solving, and execution excellence across the portfolio, including data and scientific reviews and exploring alternative solutions.

Provide strategic leadership for development of standard work to characterize the real-world distribution environment, translating this into distribution-related characterization of packaging systems.

Ensure thorough engineering and distribution packaging science is applied to deliverables for new product introductions and technology transfers.

Deliver development, design, construction, qualification/validation and operation of complex tertiary packaging components and processes, including environmental monitors, using new or existing technologies for products including APIs, drug substances, drug products, finished goods, and combinations, as applicable to samples.

Drive proactive risk management activities including risk assessment, mitigation, and communication strategies.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platforms meet safety, efficacy, quality, and robust supply standards.

Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders to facilitate effective technical support, including investigations, complaints monitoring, and rapid response activities.

Develop and maintain KPIs to measure COE support effectiveness; manage a portfolio of work and ensure delivery of priorities.

Stay informed of cGMP, cGDP and industry standards and trends.

Minimum Education Requirements and Experience

Bachelor of Science (BS) in packaging, mechanical, chemical, biochemical engineering, pharmaceutical science or chemistry or related fields with fifteen (15) years of relevant experience; OR

Master of Science (MS) in packaging, mechanical, chemical, biochemical engineering, pharmaceutical science or chemistry or related fields with twelve (12) years of relevant experience; OR

PhD in packaging, mechanical, chemical, biochemical engineering, pharmaceutical science or chemistry or related fields with eight (8) years of relevant experience.

Required Skills and Experience

Subject matter expertise in distribution technologies (cold-chain, thermal protection systems, temperature profiles, monitoring technologies, shock, and vibration) and distribution/packaging for pharmaceutical products, including parenteral and/or medical device and combination products.

Experience leading a technical team in support of packaging or distribution operations.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with ability to identify true requirements, assess risks, and develop mitigation strategies.

In-depth knowledge of global regulatory requirements for distribution (Good Distribution Practices).

Ability to develop standard work, investigations, and problem solving capabilities.

Strategic and analytical thinking focused on continuous improvement and best practices in technical support.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model: Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based roles in the U.S. work a Hybrid schedule (three days on-site per week, Monday-Thursday, with Friday remote unless business needs require otherwise). This does not apply to field-based, facility-based, or research-based roles, roles under a collective-bargaining agreement, or roles designated as remote.

Salary range: $153,800.00 - $242,200.00. Eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, retirement (401(k)), and paid time off; details at the company compensation and benefits site.
