Chief/Chair, Psychiatry & Medical Director roles at John George Psychiatric Hospital – San Leandro, CA. John George Psychiatric Hospital is the county psychiatric hospital and Psychiatric Emergency Services for Alameda County with services across multiple sites. The Department of Psychiatry includes consult services at Highland Hospital, two Intensive Outpatient Programs, and is set to expand with state funds to a Medical-Psych Unit and a Geri-Psych Unit. The position is based at John George but will oversee psychiatric services countywide. It combines clinical time with administrative responsibilities and involves collaboration with the provider and leadership team across the system. This opportunity includes a 0.3 Clinical and 0.7 Administrative split for the Chair role, and the Medical Director role entails coordination and oversight of all medical care provided at the hospital, reporting to both the Chair of Psychiatry and the CAO of JGPH. Responsibilities
Chair, Psychiatry : Serve as the clinical and operational leader of the Department of Psychiatry to ensure safe, timely, high-value, equitable care; oversee multi-site departmental services including acute inpatient psychiatry at John George, Psychiatric Emergency Services, consult-liaison services in the ER, acute care hospital settings (Alameda, San Leandro, Highland) and SNF (Fairmont), partial hospitalization program, outpatient clinics, and other programs Oversee quality improvement activities and ensure facilities meet established goals; manage clinical personnel and processes; invest in faculty development; partner with nursing and operations to meet the AHS mission Report to the AHS Chief Medical Officer or designee Medical Director : Coordinate and oversee all medical care at John George Psychiatric Hospital; act as the operational leader of the department with dual administrative and clinical responsibilities; dual reporting to the Chair of Psychiatry and the CAO of JGPH Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, plus possession of required licenses or certifications. Education
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) Licenses/Certifications
Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice Psychiatry in California Valid DEA registration Good standing in Medicare and Medicaid programs Compliance with Board-mandated education and training to maintain licensure and board certification Good standing with Medical Staff privileges appropriate to the role Experience
Three years of management and leadership experience in Psychiatry Five years of clinical practice or leadership with substantial administrative experience in an accredited hospital or medical center To Learn More and Apply
