(PA) Per Diem Physician Assistant - Emergency Dept - 135749 Worksite: Jacobs Medical Center • Schedule: Nights, 12-hour shifts, Sunday-Saturday • Appointment Type: Per Diem • Appointment Percent: 20% • Total Openings: 2 • Extended Deadline: Tue 9/23/2025 Responsibilities
Provide patient care coverage 7 days a week in the Emergency Dept., including management of ED observation patients and Senior Emergency Care Unit patients. Follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan; assess and provide medical care appropriate to patient populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Collaborate with off-site physicians within an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to patient care; perform operational level duties under general supervision as described in UCSD policies. Emphasize direct patient care delivery; manage patients with chronic and/or episodic health problems; may participate in community teaching programs and in development of patient education information. Minimum Qualifications
Graduate from a physician assistant program approved by ARC-PA. California Physician Assistant license. Current PA Certification from NCCPA. BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within six months of hire date. PALS certification. Minimum two (2) years of recent PA experience in an Emergency Department. Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes. Knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams and procedures (e.g., labs, imaging, EKGs, biopsies, GI endoscopies). Ability to independently perform clinical procedures with autonomy. Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic (PCIS/Epic preferred). Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and ability to identify deviations. Experience providing patient education and counseling and developing/implementing treatment plans. Skill in patient interviewing and history taking; strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications
Five (5+) or more years of PA experience in an Emergency Department. High-acuity triage and critical care experience. Proficiency in independently performing common ED procedures, including laceration repair, incision and drainage, splinting, wound management, and airway support. Special Conditions
Must be able to work night shifts; may be required to cover mid shifts or day shifts, on-call, and locations based on 24-hour center needs. Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment; clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years. Pay and Benefits
