Boom Supersonic
Overview
Start the Best Work of Your Career at Boom At Boom, data is more than numbers—it’s the lifeblood that fuels supersonic innovation. We’re building Symphony, the first purpose-built jet engine for sustainable supersonic passenger flight, and every test, every model, every decision depends on extracting the right insights from complex datasets. As a Data Scientist at Boom, you’ll embed directly with engineers and test teams, turning raw, noisy data into mission-critical insights. From developing pipelines that visualize test results on the fly to architecting cloud-based ETL workflows, you’ll shape how Boom makes decisions at Mach speed. If you thrive at the intersection of statistics, software, and engineering—and want to see your work directly influence the future of flight—this role is for you. Role Overview
Collaboratively plan, develop, and deliver customized data analyses that lead to data-driven and actionable results Develop high-quality software tooling that stitches together the data fabric at Boom, including planned code requirements, source control, automated tests and deployment workflows Support real-time data collection and visualization for test events Design, build and deploy ETL pipelines feeding into cloud storage solutions Approach problem-spaces at Boom with a hypothesis-driven, scientific mindset. Turn qualitative observations into quantitative data points with error bars. Back up results with statistical reasoning. Extract meaning from complex, noisy datasets. Combine heterogeneous datasets in useful ways Employ statistical, artificial intelligence, machine learning and numerical methods in relevant use cases to unlock relationships between data and systems. Know when to push the envelope and deploy state-of-the-art methods when conventional methods fall short The Ideal Candidate
Strong background in statistics, machine learning and software development; particularly with noisy, empirical datasets requiring wrangling, normalization, and tidying Proficient in writing high-quality software tooling, particularly in Python and MATLAB. Familiar with numerical computing toolsets such as scipy, numpy, pandas or MathWorks toolbox Experience in collaborative projects embedded in technical domains, especially in scientific or engineering spaces, with a desire to contribute in high-stakes environments Background in data classification, clustering and data-driven modeling. Experience selecting appropriate machine learning techniques given parameters of the problem and data Familiarity with common data storage formats (parquet, avro, HDF5, netCDF) and in-transit formats (arrow, protobuf) Demonstrates a strong work ethic and ambition, complemented by effective collaboration skills in a team setting Excels in a high-energy, independent, and challenging work environment What Will Set You Apart
Experience in systems programming languages, particularly Rust or Go Designing systems for anomaly detection Prior work with time series analysis, real-time data visualization, or databases Masters or Doctorate in a Data Science field, or a proven track record and portfolio Compensation
P3 Level - Typically 5 - 10 years of experience - Base salary range: $118,000 – $149,000 P4 Level - Typically 10 - 15 years of experience - Base salary range: $140,000 – $177,000 Actual compensation will vary based on factors including location, experience, and performance. The range listed is one component of Boom’s total rewards package, which may include long-term incentives/equity, flexible PTO, and a suite of benefits.
