Housing Staff Attorneys/Law Graduates (Right to Counsel) – Immediate Hire – Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan Offices
Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. We are the largest civil legal services provider in the country, with more than 600 staff across five boroughs. Our work focuses on housing, income and economic security, family and immigration stability, education, and health care. LSNYC seeks law graduates and/or staff attorneys to join our Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan offices as we implement New York City’s Right to Counsel law. The attorneys in our housing unit are engaged in cutting-edge litigation, in court, every day, helping prevent evictions for tens of thousands of New Yorkers each year. The Opportunity New York City’s Right to Counsel law, passed in 2017, provides income-eligible tenants who are sued for eviction in housing court the right to an attorney. LSNYC represents low-income tenants in eviction proceedings, administrative hearings, affirmative litigation, and appeals at all levels. Housing unit attorneys develop expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits. Responsibilities include community outreach, providing legal information and counsel, and trainings for advocates, tenant associations, and community groups. We seek candidates who thrive in a fast-paced, justice-driven environment and who use creative strategies to advance housing equity. Responsibilities Conduct intake and provide full legal representation in housing court for tenants referred through the Right to Counsel initiative and other sources. Litigate cases in housing court, administrative forums, appellate courts, and other state and federal courts to defend tenants facing eviction; pursue affirmative litigation and challenge agencies or actors that threaten affordable housing. Develop expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits. Provide legal advice and counseling to tenants as needed. Conduct neighborhood-based legal clinics and know-your-rights workshops. Identify trends and recurring issues for potential impact litigation. Provide trainings to other advocates, tenant associations, community members, and community groups. Qualifications A J.D. from an accredited law school and admission (or eligibility) to practice in New York. Commitment to social justice and serving low-income communities and communities of color. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and conduct community outreach in low-income neighborhoods. Strong advocacy, analytical, writing, and leadership skills. Excellent time management and organizational skills to handle a diverse, fast-paced Right to Counsel caseload. Experience in housing, landlord/tenant, or related advocacy preferred. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language frequently used by clients preferred. Salary & Benefits Salary is pursuant to our collective bargaining agreement. Salary ranges (based on years of experience): 1-10 years: $85,612 – $110,424 11-20 years: $112,950 – $133,347 21+ years: $139,500 – $164,905 Benefits include exceptional healthcare with low copays, generous dental and vision plans, vacation, holidays, sick days, parental leave, and fertility treatment coverage. Working Arrangement The position is hybrid, permitting up to 50% remote work, job duties permitting.
