Position Summary
The Medical Director is responsible for supervising the hospice inter-disciplinary team in the administration of the Tapestry Hospice Clinical services program.
Qualifications
Must be a doctor of medicine MD), or doctor of osteopathy (DO). Completion of medical education and relevant residency training required.
Must be employed by, or under contract, with the hospice.
Work experience in internal medicine, geriatrics, palliative medicine or other relevant field of medicine required.
Work experience in a certified Hospice program preferred.
Current MD/DO licensure in the state of Georgia
Board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine preferred
Current DEA license with no restrictions
Current driver’s license
Current auto insurance
Required Skills and Knowledge
Demonstrates understanding of hospice philosophy, and pain and symptom management
Works with diverse socio-economic situation without imposing own values
Appropriate professional boundaries
Provides timely and appropriate response to internal and external customer needs
Assists in orientation of new staff, as needed
Follows HIPAA Privacy Standards and related agency policies
Ability and willingness to understand and utilize company’s electronic medical record (EMR), as well as electronic pharmacy systems
Ability to use electronic signature in the EMR and pharmacy systems
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Is responsible, in conjunction with the attending physician, for the palliation and management of the terminal illness, conditions related to the terminal illness, and the general medical needs of the patient.
Provides oversight of the medical services of the program to ensure an adequate and qualified medical staff for clinical service and coverage needs.
Supervises all physician employees, as well as physicians working under contract with the hospice agency.
Periodically reviews physician staff performance and competency.
If the attending physician is unavailable, the medical director is responsible for meeting the medical needs of the patient.
The Medical Director ensures that in his/her absence, a physician designated by the Medical Director assumes the same responsibilities and obligations as the Medical Director.
The Medical Director and physician designee coordinate with other physicians and health care professionals to ensure that each patient experiences medical care that reflects hospice policy.
The Medical Director or physician designee reviews the clinical information for each hospice patient and provides written certification that it is anticipated that the patient’s life expectancy is 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course.
The physician must consider the following criteria when making this determination: a) The primary terminal condition; b) Related diagnosis(es), if any; c) Current subjective and objective medical findings; d) Current medication and treatment orders; e) Information about the medical management of any of the patient’s conditions unrelated to the terminal illness.
Before the re-certification period for each patient, the Medical Director must review: a) Review the patient’s clinical information; b) Review the patient’s and family’s expectation and wishes for the continuation of hospice care; c) Certify patient’s continued eligibility for hospice services.
Supervises, and is jointly responsible with, the inter-disciplinary team for the coordination of the patient’s medical care in its entirety.
Coordinates with Administrator to ensure that a hospice physician is on-call 24 hrs/day.
Maintains admitting privileges at one or more hospitals operating in the hospice service area
The Medical Director is responsible for directing the hospice’s Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
Assists in the development and review of clinical protocols and emergency care procedures and patient care policies.
Provides guidance to the inter-disciplinary team (IDT) in the resolution of conflict and/or ethical issues; acts as a resource to hospice staff, patients, family members and attending physicians regarding pain and symptom control measures.
Performs home visits, and visits for inpatient hospice services related to patient assessment.
