Overview
General Summary: The Senior Manager, External Innovation Portfolio Management and Operations reports into the SD, Portfolio Management & Strategic Operations of External Innovation and is responsible for enabling the team by planning inbound evaluations, managing analyses, monitoring surveillance, and tracking internal company/technology evaluations plus external opportunities and strategic disease-area opportunities aligned with the corporate strategy. You will ensure efficient and effective coordination across research, commercial, and manufacturing functions, support evaluation process phases, lead cross-functional partnerships with the transaction and alliance management teams, and manage meetings to ensure communication and alignment across stakeholders. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Executes workflows and ensures effective and efficient integration across process phases and working teams under current processes and operating procedures. Helps manage process evaluations following Vertex guidelines and provides timely visibility to the appropriate members. Refines and maintains technology-enabled tools to increase scientific insights and improve operations, processes, and knowledge management. Manages process evaluations under Vertex guidelines and provides visibility to the appropriate members at the right time. Supports the preparation of materials and evaluation summaries to aid decision-making, including organizing, documenting, interpreting, and summarizing cross-functional input for new technology landscaping projects and external business opportunities in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic fields. Conducts analysis and tracks opportunities and topics for landscape analysis, and evaluates companies; reviews materials before EC presentations. Provides regular feedback to improve efficiency and work quality. Contributes to the improvement and maintenance of knowledge management resources and tools/technologies. Participates as a team member in planning, coordinating, and executing research and evaluation of assigned ideas or targets. Regularly provides feedback to improve efficiency and work product. Builds and maintains relationships with transaction and alignment management teams, ensuring communication and coordination across departments (i.e., research). Engages with scientific and clinical subject matter experts and across functional leaders (R&D, Regulatory, Manufacturing, etc.). Helps coordinate organizational governance meetings, including BD meetings internally and externally with appropriate evaluation teams. Knowledge and Skills
Broad scientific training: the ability to quickly understand science, such as a novel mechanism of action or disease indication or a drug discovery technology. Business Acumen: understanding basic economic, commercial, and financial project valorization. Strong project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams for scientific and medical projects, setting clear goals and timelines. Problem-solving: ability to analyze, propose solutions, and identify solutions in complex situations. Risk assessment: familiarity with methodologies for risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Communication and negotiation skills for effective interaction with internal partners and senior management. Leadership: demonstrated leadership skills including leading transverse teams. Experience creating visual and written content for executive-level audiences. Proven analytical skills with the ability to use data to frame, dissect and solve problems; quantitative strength and ability to see patterns in data. Education and Experience
Advanced scientific degree preferred (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., D.V.M., etc.). 4+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry project management or cross-functional leadership experience, preferably in R&D, clinical, commercial, or consulting; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. $161,500 - $242,200 Disclosure Statement
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on several factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
