Overview
Principal Scientist, Biology-Discovery role at Merck. The Principal Scientist, Drug Discovery in our Research and Development Department will be responsible for identifying new molecular entities and technologies for use in animal health from our Company Laboratories or from external partners such as human pharma or biotech companies as well as academia. The successful candidate will drive advances on novel targets and lead research programs from ideation through early research and proof-of-concept phases up to the development stage. They will interface with researchers and senior management across the organization and external partners, operating within a matrix structure to garner resources for research work (Medicinal and Process Chemistry, in vitro Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Disease Models, Formulation Development, Safety & Toxicology). The position reports to the Distinguished Scientist and Global Head, Discovery – Non-infectious Diseases.
Responsibilities
Identify new molecular entities and technologies for use in animal health from internal laboratories or external partners and academia. Lead research programs from ideation through early research and proof-of-concept to development stages. Collaborate with researchers, management, and external partners; manage resources within a matrix structure to support research work across disciplines (Medicinal and Process Chemistry, in vitro Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Disease Models, Formulation Development, Safety & Toxicology). Interface with internal stakeholders and external partners to drive target advancement and project progress. Education
Required: DVM/VMD, and a PhD in experimental pharmacology. Experience
Minimum of 8 years of industry or pharmaceutical research experience in drug discovery or preclinical research with a focus on in vivo pharmacology. Advanced and thorough knowledge in pharmacology, disease mechanisms, and preclinical models. Expertise in one of these fields: oncology, diabetes, respiratory & immunology, cardiology, pain & inflammation, reproduction, drug delivery or biotechnology. Knowledge of regulatory aspects of pharmaceuticals including GLP, GCP and GMP. Ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, contracts, and timelines. Ability to independently plan, recommend, and complete research programs. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; capable of producing executive-level presentations and documents. Experience in preparing patent applications in support of research efforts. Travel: 10%. Preferred Experience
Board certification in Pharmacology. Project management skills within pharmaceuticals. Experience collaborating with outsource providers, vendors, contractors, and academic institutions. Experience working with business development to identify and license external technology opportunities. Location
