Overview

Data Scientist role at Global Support and Development (GSD). This is a full-time, fixed-term position reporting to the Information Manager. The Data Scientist designs, develops, and implements data pipelines, automation solutions, and advanced data processing to support GSD's disaster preparedness and response efforts. The role emphasizes meticulous data cleaning and transformation to ensure data quality, supports analytical tasks, and optimizes data for visualization in tools such as Tableau. Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines for ingesting, cleaning, transforming, and validating large and diverse datasets from databases, cloud platforms, APIs, and various file formats. Implement robust data cleaning and preprocessing techniques to handle missing values, outliers, inconsistencies, and ensure data integrity for downstream analysis and visualization. Develop and deploy automation scripts and workflows to streamline data collection, processing, and reporting, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency. Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries for data extraction, manipulation, and in-depth analysis from various databases. Collaborate with the Data Visualization Analyst to understand data requirements and contribute to dashboards and data visualizations in Tableau. Provide support for geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data analysis, including preparing clean, spatially-enabled data and automating geospatial analysis workflows. Conduct data analysis to identify trends or patterns and provide insights to inform decision-making. Ensure compliance with data protection and privacy requirements and align with industry best practices. Support risk mitigation efforts for internal and external work. Provide technical expertise for statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and developing basic predictive models when required. Create documentation for data pipelines, automation scripts, and data models to ensure maintainability. Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders to validate requirements and present technical solutions and findings clearly. Uphold GSD values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work; promote stewardship of resources to benefit disaster-affected communities. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Required Experience: Five (5) or more years in a Data Scientist, Data Engineer, or similar role with emphasis on analytical problem-solving, data cleaning, processing, and automation. Proven experience building and maintaining data pipelines using Python, R, or similar languages to ensure data quality and accessibility. Proven experience with advanced data manipulation and analysis of large datasets to extract actionable insights. A strong portfolio demonstrating proficiency in analytics, data modeling, cleaning, and pipeline development. Education: Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field; or equivalent experience and training. Certifications: Relevant certifications are a plus (e.g., Python for Data Science, cloud data platforms, data engineering or advanced data analytics). Project management certification desired. Knowledge/Skills: Proficiency in Python or R with data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy); Strong SQL skills for advanced querying and data management; Experience in statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and identifying trends to drive insights; Experience visualizing data for dashboards in tools like Tableau; Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Prefect); Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and ETL/ELT processes; Understanding of API integrations; Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and cross-functional communication; Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple projects; Understanding of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian response (preferred); French and/or Spanish language skills are highly desirable; Strong organizational skills and ability to shift tasks rapidly. Working Conditions
