Overview The Smithsonian Institution, Undersecretary for Science & Research, National Air and Space Museum (NASM), collects, preserves, studies, and exhibits artifacts related to aviation and spaceflight and the study of the universe. NASM is administered as one Museum with multiple locations and provides access to the nation’s aviation and space flight history to millions of visitors annually. The incumbent serves as an Education Program Specialist within NASM’s Bezos Learning Center (BLC) and is responsible for supporting the development of educational programming and applying professional processes to ensure programming meets objectives. Duties and Responsibilities – Education and Programming (50%) Devises and researches the applicability of new learning techniques and technologies to disseminate institutional resources in physical or digital environments. Applies instructional design methods, educational technology training, design and development, and various learning styles to facilitate educational programming in non-formal settings. Incorporates museum educational programs and materials with established educational principles to measure participant proficiency. Works with the museum’s Business and Operations Team to make purchases related to BLC initiatives. Develops and delivers educational activities targeting BLC audiences, including all stages from conceptualizing to piloting and implementation. Provides reporting on project status, progress, and timelines; informs leadership of lag and needs for approvals. Develops strategies to engage diverse audiences through digital platforms, increasing accessibility of NASM content and supporting pan-institutional collaboration. Technical Competence & Innovation (25%) Proposes and implements innovative strategies for developing educational programs and updating legacy materials with modern approaches. Explores and applies new technologies to amplify the BLC’s ability to engage audiences and broadens reach through virtual programs. Provides technical assistance for digital projects and collaborates with IT to ensure smooth operation of digital systems. Maintains technical understanding of learning environments, structures, curricula, and teaching standards for varied learning styles and age groups. Technical Documentation (25%) Prepares drafts and mock-ups of digital presentations, learning guides, and other materials to support outreach and programming. Supports developing procedures and tools to gather feedback and engagement data for BLC programs, organizing information for guidance. Evaluates educational programming to align goals with concepts and improve delivery and applicability; performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or 3-5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination. Related experience includes: Practical knowledge in developing and administering educational materials for curated learning programs. Knowledge of providing technical assistance related to educational concepts for diverse learners. Skill in using learning instruments and data to identify appropriate materials and objectives. Skill in developing learning materials and resources to supplement programming. Ability to work in a team-based environment supporting academic enrichment activities. Ability to collaborate on all aspects of program development to serve K-12 and lifelong learners. Ability to research and identify information to support educational programming. Ability to present information clearly to audiences with varying levels of understanding. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with NASM staff, Smithsonian units, other museums, and community organizations. Ability to order equipment and tracking orders; organize information and processes. Technical experience in educational settings. Note: Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to U.S. higher education for the purposes of this announcement.
