The Director of Government Affairs will lead the Chamber’s state and federal advocacy work while overseeing day-to-day operations of the Government Affairs & Advocacy team. Reporting to the Vice President of Civic Strategy & Policy, the Director will manage two team members focused on local government relations and events/programming, ensuring the team delivers high-quality advocacy, engagement, and programming for Chamber members. This role will also provide staff leadership to key Chamber committees related to government affairs, offering expertise and support to business leaders and elected officials as they shape policy priorities for the Chamber. Strong communications skills are essential, as the Director will play a key role in articulating the Chamber’s advocacy positions—supporting the development of messaging, materials, and external communications that clearly convey the business community’s priorities. The successful candidate will balance strategic advocacy with team management, stakeholder engagement, communications, and committee support, ensuring the Chamber remains a leading voice for the region’s business community at the state and federal level. Responsibilities

Develop and execute the Chamber’s state and federal government affairs strategy, aligned with the Chamber’s mission and goals. Manage and mentor two team members, overseeing day-to-day team operations to ensure effective advocacy and programming. Provide staff leadership and support for internal and external committees related to government affairs, ensuring members are informed, engaged, and positioned to advance policy goals. Represent the Chamber with state and federal policymakers, agencies, and partner organizations. Analyze proposed legislation and emerging policy issues, make recommendations, and implement advocacy strategies to achieve desired outcomes. Support coordination of major advocacy trips, meetings, and events with policymakers and stakeholders. Draft and support development of clear, compelling advocacy communications—including talking points, policy briefs, position statements, and member updates. Serve as a spokesperson and represent the Chamber in select public forums, media interactions, and communications opportunities. Collaborate with other Chamber departments to integrate advocacy work with broader organizational initiatives and communications. Partner with the VP on departmental budget planning, resource allocation, and internal goal setting to ensure alignment with Chamber priorities and efficient use of resources. Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations related to lobbying and political activity. Competencies

This position supervises two Government Affairs & Advocacy Managers. Qualifications And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business, Communications, or a related field. Minimum 6–8 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, campaigns, or government service, with preference for association or business community experience. Strong knowledge of state and federal legislative and political processes; familiarity with local government issues is a plus. Exceptional communication skills, with demonstrated experience drafting advocacy materials, shaping messages, and engaging with external audiences. Demonstrated ability to manage and inspire a team. Proven track record of building relationships with elected officials, staff, business leaders, and community stakeholders. Work Environment

This position is located in a climate-controlled downtown office site and requires a minimal amount of external activity. The job will require talking, listening, researching, and sitting for long periods working at a computer screen. This position does not require travel. Requirements include some evenings and weekends, flexible work week available to accommodate these instances. Our Culture
