The DON ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care to individuals recovering from acquired brain injuries and associated impairments, including stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI). The role demands a leader with expertise in neurorehabilitation, operational efficiency, staff development, and regulatory compliance. This position will work closely with the leaders in other areas for program and policy development and service delivery models. The Nurse Director will also work closely with Business Development to support Moody’s Mission of being an industry expert in brain injury by developing and providing education to the community. Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Manage activities of nursing to ensure safety, compliance, and high-quality nursing care; represent Moody as the industry expert in brain injury to the community.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
Provide strategic and clinical leadership to nursing staff, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based care tailored to neurorehabilitation patients on all 3 Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute campuses. Oversee and manage the day-to-day nursing operations, including staffing, scheduling, budgeting, and performance evaluation. Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and standards of care in alignment with state, federal, and accreditation guidelines (e.g., CARF). Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive care plans for patients recovering from stroke, TBI, and SCI, and as well as other neurological conditions. Monitor patient outcomes and develop quality improvement initiatives to enhance care effectiveness and efficiency. Participate in IPP meetings, patient and family treatment planning, and staff training. Ensure infection prevention, medication management, and patient safety protocols are strictly followed. Identifies problem areas in the nursing unit, such as understaffing, absenteeism, and wastefulness, and takes corrective action. Engages in studies and investigations related to improving nursing care and systems. Responsible for development and monitoring of nursing supplies and budgets at each location. Responsible for development and presentation of education for community outreach such as CEU activities and brain injury awareness activities. Support and assist in research efforts both of Moody employees and affiliates.
Staffing & Workforce Management
Recruit, onboard, and retain high-performing nursing staff; oversee staffing schedules, assignments, and productivity metrics. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional development across all nursing roles. Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and competency assessments regularly. Mentor nursing staff to foster professional growth and ensure continued competency in neurorehabilitation nursing practices.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Partner with physicians, pharmacy contacts, physical/occupational/speech therapists, case managers, and social workers to ensure coordinated, individualized patient care plans. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, discharge planning, and family education sessions. Act as a liaison between nursing staff, administration, and external partners to ensure clear communication and shared goals.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives focused on clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and compliance. Monitor safety and performance indicators such as infection control practices, medication administration, fall prevention, pressure injury reduction and business practices. Ensure documentation integrity in the electronic health record (EHR) and adherence to HIPAA and facility policies.
Education & Development
Develop and oversee staff orientation, training, and continuing education programs specific to neurorehabilitation nursing. Promote evidence-based practice, research application, and nursing innovation in post-acute rehab care delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Current RN license in Texas (BSN required; MSN or healthcare-related Master’s preferred). Minimum 3-5 years of nursing leadership experience; neuro rehab, acute rehab, or long-term care experience strongly preferred. Certification in rehabilitation nursing (CRRN) or neuroscience nursing (CNRN) preferred. Deep understanding of neurological disorders, post-acute rehab, and interdisciplinary care models. Proven leadership, team building, and conflict resolution skills. Excellent organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills. Requires flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, and on-call responsibilities. Frequent interaction with patients, family members, and clinical staff in a hospital setting.

Accommodation - adjustment of the lens of the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from the eye.
