Overview Physician - Hematology/Oncology (Sign On Bonus Eligible) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Marion VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time Hematology/Oncology physician to join the Specialty Care team.

Responsibilities

The Hematologist/Oncologist will spend most of their time in direct patient care. Some portion of their time may be spent in supervision of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or medical students. The physician may have some limited administrative work as assigned.

In the outpatient Specialty Care setting, evaluate new patients by performing a comprehensive history, physical examination, and record review, and formulate a diagnostic and management plan. Follow-up of established patients will occur at the direction and discretion of the specialist. The hematologist/oncologist may release patients back to the management of their primary care provider if/when deemed appropriate.

The incumbent, working with other staff hematologist/oncologist, will share duties to serve as a consultant for the hospitalist service on a relatively small inpatient unit.

Oversee the chemotherapy unit, including determining treatment regimens, patient suitability for treatment, and initial management of chemotherapy complications. The candidate may perform diagnostic procedures such as bone marrow biopsy.

Administrative Duties

Leadership responsibilities: participation in staff meetings, hospital committees, and peer review processes. Demonstrate effective communication with staff and leadership, and may act as Section Chief when the Section Chief is on leave.

HR/Credentialing: Maintaining VA training requirements, timely completion of documentation, and upkeep of credentials required for privileging and re-privileging per medical staff by-laws. Participation in the FPPE/OPPE process.

Time/Leave Management: Adherence to tour of duties, timely requests for leave, and clinic cancellations.

Medical Record/Clinical Management: Timely completion of consults, notes, and encounters. Adherence to CPRS documentation rules and requirements; adherence to clinic and OR procedures for patient scheduling and access.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and Incentives

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): May be authorized for highly qualified candidates.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Must meet eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program award amounts and eligibility periods are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

EDRP Authorized: Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply for incentive. Contact the EDRP Coordinator for questions and assistance.

Qualifications Basic Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from an approved school; degree must have been obtained from LCME- or AOA-accredited schools, or ECFMG certification for foreign graduates.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State/Territory/DC.

Residency training in an approved core specialty leading to eligibility for board certification; VA may require board certification for faculty status; approved residencies include those approved by ACGME or AOA, or equivalent foreign programs with verification.

English proficiency; ability to pass pre-employment checks; background security investigation; may be subject to onboarding requirements. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.

Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from LCME- or AOA-accredited schools; for foreign graduates, verification of ECFMG certification as applicable.

Physical Requirements This position requires a pre-employment physical. May involve lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing 3-5 hours; near vision, depth perception, color vision; and hearing considerations (hearing aid permitted).

Work Schedule and Benefits

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, up to 5 days CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (full-time with board certification)

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
