This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. It involves performing Surgical Services duties, including medical services involving incision or excision of a patient’s body, such as interventional pain management and other procedures, and ensuring a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery. The role is that of a clinical technologist with specialized knowledge or skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience, commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. It is an experienced level role requiring basic knowledge of procedures and tools obtained through work experience and vocational or technical education. This position is responsible for maintaining continuous, efficient, and smooth patient flow in the Surgical Services setting. It provides support and assistance for physicians and registered nurses before, during, and after a surgical service procedure based on standards and protocol. It responds quickly to urgent patient needs by notifying a physician or registered nurse. It demonstrates detailed knowledge of the different types of surgical equipment and their use. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Two (2) years of operating room experience. The duties and responsibilities below describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned. Assists the Operating Room team with routine clinical activities; acts under the supervision of a Registered Nurse during surgical procedures. Sets up daily procedure rooms with established surgical protocols and physician preferences. Turns over procedure rooms in a timely manner. Prepares surgical equipment and instruments for specific procedures; demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique and informs the clinical leader of any equipment problems. Circulates throughout the unit to assist nurses and physicians as needed pre-, intra-, and post-procedure. Escorts patients into procedure rooms and obtains baseline vital signs, connecting patients to monitoring equipment. Under the review of the RN, obtains pre-procedure data including height, weight, allergies, NPO status, and post-procedure ride contact and callback number. Assists during procedures as appropriate; assumes responsibilities of the Patient Care Technician. Verbalizes clinical knowledge of patient identifiers and time-out procedures. Properly collects, handles, labels, and transports specimens in accordance with policy. Cleans and disinfects all surgical equipment using sterilization techniques and asepsis. Assists in transferring the patient to the Recovery Room. Communicates order supplies and needs with other departments. Participates in restocking of rooms and checking and cleaning equipment daily. Maintains collaborative, team relationships to support achievement of goals and a positive work environment. Adapts to schedule changes in a positive manner. May assist physicians in applying casts, assembling materials, holding limbs, and trimming casts; may assist in applying CPMs, cooling machines, braces, and other devices. Physical Requirements
Ability to work within the semi-restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and perioperative support areas. Stands under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods. Potential for muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment; exposure to hazards from cautery units and autoclaves; potential for cuts from sharp instruments. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, high noise levels, radiation, lasers, and extreme temperatures. Ability to wear a protective lead apron for extended periods and exposure to radioactivity, anesthesia gases, and septic infections. Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, and equipment. Frequent contacts with patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the Operating Room. Skills & Abilities
Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention practices. Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure optimal patient care. Basic knowledge of computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure. Basic knowledge and skills to provide care to patients throughout the lifespan. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments within the hospital. Demonstrates essential knowledge in procedures related to their surgical specialty area and sufficient general knowledge to assist in other specialties as needed. Knowledge of personal and patient safety with the use of electrical cautery.
