Position Summary Reporting to the Rehabilitation Therapies Supervisor/Manager, the Outpatient Physical Therapist conducts comprehensive assessment of outpatient clients with physical and functional deficits, plans and implements individual/group physical therapy treatments to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, prevent permanent disability and restore independence, using various treatment techniques. Collaborates with other disciplines to arrange for appropriate follow-up care and facilitates a successful return to home and work environments. Provides student training according to departmental guidelines and participates in continuous education.

Job Responsibilities

Conducts physical therapy evaluation procedures according to professional and departmental guidelines.

Responds to all consults in assigned area within 24 hours; completes evaluation and documentation within 24 hours of consult (IP).

Reviews patient records, gathers necessary information, and obtains a physician’s order prior to assessing the patient.

Selects evaluation procedures that reflect understanding of the patient’s diagnosis, abilities, and limitations. Administers evaluation procedures according to standardized tests; adapts evaluation procedures as needed.

Interprets evaluation results, develops an integrated diagnostic impression, and makes recommendations. Performs re-evaluations according to departmental policies or changes in patient status.

Educates patient and caregiver regarding evaluation findings and management of care recommendations.

Establishes treatment goals and plans

Formulates treatment goals and plans reflecting the patient’s needs and meets departmental, institutional, and third-party requirements. Establishes measurable and attainable short and long-term goals in collaboration with patient and/or caregiver.

Modifies goals as warranted by changes in patient status. Assesses discharge needs and communicates follow-up plans.

Implements treatment and supports patient progress

Implements comprehensive individual and group treatment with clinical competence. Sets treatment priorities and uses creative approaches to patient problems.

Recommends and/or issues appropriate assistive devices or durable medical equipment and ensures proper fit. Develops and instructs home programs; maintains therapeutic relationships with patients.

Notifies supervisor when applying to age groups not regularly served and seeks appropriate guidance. Adheres to diagnosis-related precautions and maintains safety.

Assigns appropriate tasks to support staff and monitors supplies, requesting replacements as needed.

Compliance and Professional Growth

Complies with departmental, institutional, and accrediting agency policies and standards. Completes documentation accurately and timely; meets productivity standards.

Engages in ongoing professional growth; stays current with advances in physical therapy through continuing education and literature; understands professional rules and regulations; supervises aides as applicable.

Education and Certifications

Work requires a Bachelor’s / Master’s or equivalent in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required

Current and unencumbered Physical Therapist License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

APTA and APTA MA membership preferred.

Current Certification from AHA or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Workers.

Experience

Physical therapists with related experience are encouraged to apply.
