Respiratory Therapist
fulfills the needs of patients, families and the community by providing a variety of routine and intensive therapies, diagnostic procedures and patient assessments in accordance with licensure, certification, training, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include: Maintains and stocks respiratory equipment; ensures ventilator and life support equipment are operable. Ventilator management with advanced vent modes (e.g., APRV, ASV, NAVA) and ARDS protocol. Inhaled Nitric Oxide administration; airway clearance therapies and airway management. Non-invasive ventilation; oxygen therapy; bedside PFTs; indirect calorimetry. Emergency response and department care; Level I Trauma Center coverage; post-surgical ventilator weaning and care (including open heart surgery, liver transplant). ICU mobilization; multidisciplinary approach to tracheostomy management and speaking valves. Inpatient sleep studies; point of care testing; general floors and multidisciplinary care units (e.g., Cardiovascular Surgical Unit, Level III NICU, two medical ICUs, Trauma/Neuro ICU, Pulmonary Care Unit, etc.). Participation in education pathways: clinical rotations, annual respiratory education for nursing and physicians, and departmental continuing education lectures. Qualifications Graduation from an approved two-year respiratory therapist program. Licensed by the District of Columbia Health Regulation; licensed as an RRT and NBRC certified. CRT or RRT with plan to become registered within a year; NBRC-registered where applicable. BLS for Health Care Professionals; ACLS and PALS within six months of hire. Excellent critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Minimum 0–1 year of full-time experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting.
