Senior Surgical Technician – Full Time – Days (San Francisco)
Job Summary
Under direct supervision, assists surgical team before, during, and after surgery. Provides expert support, assistance and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
Responsibilities
Direct, check, review, assign, organize, coordinate, train and report on the work of one or more other Surgical Technicians; or those with at least two years of experience as a Surgical Technician, plus demonstrated ability to perform complex techniques under general supervision.
Coordinate configuration of equipment to provide ease of use. Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments according to instructions. Check sterility, cleanliness, and functionality prior to the start of the case. Assist with setup and use of equipment during procedures. Allocate equipment for procedures daily.
Assist team members to place and position patient on table. Scrub arms and hands, don gown and gloves; scrub procedures as primary or secondary staff; aid team to don gowns and gloves; don PPE as required.
Hand instruments and supplies to surgeon, hold retractors, and perform other tasks as directed by surgeon and circulating nurse. Count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation per hospital policy. Apply dressings post-surgery.
Actively participate in meeting patient safety goals to promote quality and safe patient care.
Clean operating room and assist in room turnover. Wash and sterilize equipment.
Recommend guidelines for use of equipment, purchase of new/replacement equipment, and additional parts and supplies.
Assemble/combine case carts with supplies, instruments, and equipment in preparation for procedures.
Perform other related duties as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Motivates and directs other employees but does not have authority to hire, fire or discipline.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
Minimum two years of current acute Operating Room experience.
High School Diploma/GED.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Additional Requirements
Surgical Technicians certified by the Association of Operating Room Technicians, affiliated with the Association of Operating Room Nurses, qualify as Senior Surgical Technicians upon presentation of their certificate.
Strong experience with minimally invasive, general, ENT, eyes, plastics, orthopedics, vascular, open heart-thoracic, spine, urology, GYN, podiatry, maxillofacial, and neuro surgery specialties.
Willingness to participate in training of RNs and other disciplines in the scrub role.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence.
Basic computer skills; ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
Willingness to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Refer to Position Specifications in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
Video, orthopedic and other equipment experience related to the above surgeries preferred.
