Description The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will serve as the representative of pharmacy within their area, overseeing all aspects of the pharmacy department's care provision. Responsibilities include reviewing pharmacy and organizational policies related to drug use and departmental readiness for regulatory audits, managing formulary development and drug-related education, collaborating with hospital departments to evaluate and modify pharmacy services, and training clinical staff and learners, including competency assessments. The role also involves oversight of pharmacy team members on their unit when applicable, scholarly activities such as authorship and presentations, and facilitating collaborative practice opportunities at Children's National.

Qualifications Minimum Education:

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)

Minimum Work Experience:

2 years of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized, academic, or clinical setting; 6 years if without a PGY2 residency.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

Pharmacist licensure in the District of Columbia (plus/minus Maryland and Virginia depending on specialty); Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS).

Functional Accountabilities

Order Processing and Accreditation Readiness:

Interpret medication orders, oversee packaging and distribution, input orders into pharmacy systems, assist in inspections, review medication lists, and verify new medication orders.

Interventions and Documentation:

Monitor drug therapy, document interventions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and participate in medication reconciliation.

Staff Development and Training:

Educate and supervise pharmacy students, residents, and new pharmacists; provide lectures and develop educational programs.

Clinical Services:

Ensure appropriate medication use, evaluate and recommend formulary additions, provide drug information, and support drug shortage management.

Quality Improvement:

Lead cost-saving and quality initiatives, develop order sets, and participate in performance and safety activities.

Professional Development:

Participate in research, attend and present at conferences, and engage in preceptor development.

Organizational Accountabilities:

Demonstrate teamwork, communication, problem-solving, cost management, and safety practices.
