NVA General Practice Job Description Position Title: Veterinary Technician Job Type: Non-Exempt Schedule: Varies based on hospital Hourly Rate: Varies based on hospital and experience Are you looking for an environment to expand your veterinary nursing skills while working with a supportive team of RVTs, Veterinary Assistants and Doctors? Our Open Hospital policy allows clients to stay with their pet throughout their visit, providing a unique learning experience for clinical skills and client education. Our hospital is fast paced, with a mix of scheduled appointments (wellness and general practice) and elective surgeries. Outpatient Team Members are responsible for outpatient care and procedures, including management of scheduled technician, wellness and urgent care appointments and related patient care. This position requires technician experience. This position is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in all aspects of veterinary medicine, often requiring multi-tasking, critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly and calmly in crises. Clear communication with veterinarians, practice personnel and clients is essential to ensure patient care. The role requires working at least one weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday) per week and two holiday shifts per year. Essential Qualifications and Responsibilities are described below.
Responsibilities
Able to help direct the workflow and accurately and efficiently provide advice to owners in person or over the phone, relay messages to doctors and clients for scheduled, technician, and urgent care appointments, and patient care needs Able to perform veterinary technical skills efficiently, accurately, and with minimal supervision Assess patient care status, review patient plan, perform treatments according to the veterinarian’s orders and document as necessary Interact with clients and patients, take histories, obtain patient vitals, explain treatments, procedures, medications, and disease processes Administer IM, IV, and SQ injections; obtain blood samples from multiple sites Place IV catheters Understand vital parameters (HR, RR, MM/CRT), obtain them accurately, and report abnormalities to the doctor Understand common disease processes and use appropriate medical terminology Familiarity with common medications, standard doses, contraindications, calculate dosages, and administer medications Monitor, assess, and treat critical care patients; update doctors and clients on patient status; place IV catheters Perform radiographs and evaluate positioning and exposure; adhere to safety standards Monitor sedated or anesthetized patients Use common diagnostic equipment and perform in-house lab tests (e.g., blood smears, PCV/TP, BG, cytology, ELISA/rapid tests) Maintain cleanliness and organization of the department, treatment area, cages and runs

Essential Qualifications
A Registered Veterinary Technician or field-trained assistant with 1-2 years or more of experience. RVT license preferred but not required with extensive prior experience Offer genuine client service and maintain a professional, courteous, and helpful attitude Strong dedication and commitment to quality care Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and attention to detail Ability to make independent thoughtful decisions and solve complex problems Maintain excellent teamwork and communication under stressful situations Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment Willingness to proactively help where needed; drive to improve team, clients, and patients’ outcomes High school diploma or equivalent and 18 years of age or older Must be able to lift or move 40 lbs independently Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use hands and arms regularly; sit and stand for extended periods Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed Open to working at Los Altos Animal Hospital when needed Background check upon hire
