Job Title: EMS Medical Director (Part-Time)
Location: Forsyth County, NC
Contract Term: July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2028
Hours: Approx. 8 hours On-Site Per Week + additional availability as required
Department: Department of Emergency Services
Reports To: Emergency Services Leadership Team
We're hiring a qualified physician to serve as the EMS Medical Director on a part-time contract basis. The Medical Director will provide expert medical oversight and leadership for the County's Emergency Medical Services, including 911 Communications, EMS Education Institution, Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH), and Behavioral Health initiatives. The position includes establishing medical protocols, overseeing clinical performance, supporting training and quality improvement, and representing the County in professional and public settings.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Oversight & Protocol Development
Establish, approve, and annually review treatment protocols for adult and Pediatric patients. Establish and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch Priority Reference Systems. Provide clinical supervision and performance evaluation for EMS and 911 personnel. Offer direct oversight for post-overdose and behavioural health response programs under MIH.
Education & Quality Management
Guide EMS training and continuous education programs. Review patient care cases in coordination with the EMS quality management team. Chair quarterly EMS System Performance Improvement (Peer Review) Committee meetings. Develop procedures for on-line medical direction and 24/7 availability.
System Leadership & Liaison Duties
Attend weekly on-site hours (8 hours per week minimum). Participate in Emergency Services leadership team meetings. Represent the County in media, public relations, and healthcare system collaborations. Serve as a liaison with hospitals, healthcare providers, law enforcement, fire services, and public health entities.
Administrative Authority
Advise on medical supplies, equipment, and scope of practice. Exercise authority to restrict, suspend, or revoke EMS personnel privileges based on performance.
Qualifications:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) Current North Carolina Medical License (required) Board-certified or board-eligible in Emergency Medicine (preferred) Completion of an EMS Fellowship (preferred) Active clinical practice required Demonstrated familiarity with prehospital emergency medicine Experience with EMS system oversight, protocol development, and quality assurance Strong leadership, communication, and public speaking skills
Work Conditions:
Primarily administrative/consultative role with part-time hours Weekly in-office hours with flexible remote support Occasional off-hour availability for consultation and public health emergencies
Additional Duties (Beyond Office Hours):
While the core on-site requirement is 8 hours weekly, the Medical Director must also:
Be available for after-hours consultation Chair quarterly meetings (Peer Review Committee) Provide medical oversight and guidance for EMS, 911, and behavioral health teams Represent the County in media and community settings as needed
