Overview
The City of Williston
Situated at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, Williston, North Dakota, covers 23 square miles and is the county seat of Williams County. Located just 60 miles from the Canadian border and 18 miles from the Montana border, Williston is known as the “Western Star” and celebrates its western heritage. The city is a regional hub for business, leisure, and economic development, offering access to historic sites, world-class hunting and fishing, and national and state parks.
Williston has historically been a booming commerce center due to its proximity to the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, earning the nickname “Boomtown.” It has a rich history as a gathering place for early inhabitants, fur traders, explorers, and agricultural producers. Today, driven by the Bakken oil formation, Williston is home to many residents working in the oil industry, making North Dakota the second-largest oil-producing state.
While population growth has stabilized, Williston experienced significant expansion over recent years, with a 210% increase since 2010, reaching a population of 29,160 as of the 2020 Census. The city’s economy is primarily based on oil, agriculture, and tourism, hosting over 200 oil service companies, including several of the top ten globally.
CHI St. Alexius Health Williston , part of CommonSpirit Health, has served the community since 1920, providing primary and specialty care, including family medicine, 3D mammography, orthopedics, and neurology.
CommonSpirit Health, formed from the merger of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health in 2019, is a nonprofit, Catholic health system dedicated to building healthier communities, advocating for the vulnerable, and innovating healthcare delivery.
