The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking candidates for a one-year clinical (non-ACGME accredited) fellowship position in Transplant & Oncology Infectious Diseases.
Eligible applicants will have completed at least
two years
of an ACGME-accredited Infectious Diseases fellowship program, be either board certified or board eligible in Infectious Diseases, and have an Alabama medical license or be AL license-eligible. The application process for this one-year position does not involve the National Residency Matching Program. An M.D. or D.O. is required.
The focus of this position is to provide advanced training in the expanding field of Immunocompromised/Transplant Infectious Diseases and will offer exposure to patients undergoing heart, lung, liver, and kidney transplantation and ventricular assist device implantation, as well as patients with hematologic malignancies and undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation. Research opportunities in basic/translational science in the immunocompromised host, the Mycoses Study Group, undergraduate/graduate medical education, quality improvement, infection prevention/antimicrobial stewardship are available.
Successful applicants will be appointed to a full-time faculty position as
Clinical Instructor , precepted by UAB Transplant & Oncology ID faculty. This position offers a rich clinical experience at a high-volume academic center performing
over 440 transplants annually
and home to the
O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center —Alabama’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Individuals appointed to this position will spend approximately 6 months on the inpatient services, rotating between two specialized teams: one focused on infections in solid organ transplant recipients, and the other on patients with hematologic malignancies, stem cell transplant, and CAR-T cell therapy. You will rotate across both services to gain comprehensive exposure, but we recognize the importance of aligning training with personal career goals—so we offer
flexibility
to adjust the distribution of your time based on your prior experience and interests. This will include approximately 1 weekend per month of coverage as well as working over one major holiday. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to participate in 3-4 months of elective time designed to complement Transplant & Oncology ID training, which can be customized to deepen your expertise and support
scholarly activities
including clinical research, quality improvement, or educational projects. Outpatient training will occur via weekly continuity clinic with Transplant & Oncology ID faculty. The candidate will teach medical students, residents and fellows who may be rotating on service and may also engage in formal teaching activities in the University.
