Overview
Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) is the preeminent professional theatre in Arizona, recognized as the Official Arizona State Theatre. Founded in 1966, ATC is the sole LORT professional nonprofit regional theatre operating in two major metropolitan areas, Phoenix/Tempe and Tucson. ATC has a history of artistic excellence and community impact, engaging audiences through mainstage productions, community outreach, and student matinees. ATC contributes to the local economy and supports cultural vitality in the Phoenix and Tucson regions. ATC’s mission is to create world-class theatre about what it means to be alive today, inspiring curiosity and creativity, sparking empathy and joy, and bringing Arizonans together. The theatres’ performances provide spaces for joy, communion, and reflection, inviting audiences to connect through diverse productions and community engagement. This leadership transition presents momentum and opportunity for ATC through the Rise Above Campaign, a major capacity-building initiative. The organization has a strong financial foundation and is entering its 58th Season with stability and resources for growth. ATC is governed by a 20-member board of trustees and operates with a co-leadership model in which the Executive Director and Artistic Director co-lead and report to the Board. ATC has a full-time staff of 74 and a broader staff of over 125 including part-time and contract roles. The fiscal-year budget for 2025 anticipates approximately $8 million in revenue from earned and contributed sources, with contributed revenue comprising about 55% of the total. The Executive Director role requires relocation to the Phoenix area and leadership across the organization to advance strategic initiatives, financial oversight, and community engagement in both Phoenix and Tucson. Role and Responsibilities
Finance Oversight and Fundraising
Partner with the Board and Artistic Director to drive the development and ongoing management of ATC’s annual budget (approximately $8 million) with an emphasis on maintaining a balanced budget. Develop annual revenue and expense projections, supporting continuous growth in budget, programming, and community outreach. Contribute to planning, execution, and growth of fundraising activities (local donors, foundations, government support, corporate connections) and lead Board-driven initiatives. Embrace other finance oversight and fundraising responsibilities as needed.
Board Development and Strategic Planning
Collaborate with the Board to recruit new members and advisory committees; serve as the key liaison maintaining proactive, transparent communications. Partner with the Board to implement strategic plans and goals for earned and contributed revenue, ensuring sustainability. Lead multi-year strategic planning and participate in long-range planning activities as prescribed by the Board. Engage in other board development and strategic planning initiatives as needed.
Operational Leadership and Staff Supervision
Provide oversight of all administrative, marketing, fundraising, facility contracts, operations, and financial functions; balance artistic goals with financial parameters, including participation in relevant contract negotiations. Reevaluate systems, promote new business models for sustainable success, and oversee human resources and payroll for all staff and volunteers. Foster a supportive and positive workplace culture, focusing on work/life balance, inclusive hiring, staff development, and career growth. Embrace other operational leadership responsibilities as needed.
External Relations and Community Engagement
Develop and maintain relationships with funding, artistic, educational, and community partners; raise ATC’s visibility and reputation across communities. Represent ATC in public speaking, fundraising, and development activities; participate in national associations and foster partnerships for resource sharing. Collaborate with the Artistic Director to develop diverse intergenerational audiences through partnerships and collaborations. Embrace other external relations responsibilities as needed.
Traits and Characteristics
Strong communicator with public-facing leadership; creative, collaborative, and able to influence and empower a team. Willingness to lead organizational change, roll up sleeves, and work across a changing environment; act as a visible advocate and motivator. Ability to manage resources effectively and drive engagement among stakeholders.
Qualifications
Several years of senior leadership experience in a regional theatre organization of significant size or a comparable producing or artistic institution. Strong financial acumen with a track record of developing and managing balanced budgets, financial oversight, contract negotiation, and long-range planning. Strategic, thoughtful leadership with sound judgment and the ability to guide transformational change while maintaining stability and growth; experience in fundraising strategy is required. Proven ability to build, manage, and empower high-performing cross-department teams; excellent written and verbal communication and a commitment to inclusive leadership. A strong community orientation with willingness to engage with stakeholders in Phoenix and Tucson; readiness to relocate to the Phoenix area.
