Essential Duties
Provides evaluation, diagnostic, and medication management services to child and adolescent clients and adults, according to applicable Texas Administrative Code and DCMHMR policies and procedures.
Conducts psychiatric evaluation and medication management; records documentation to substantiate diagnosis and treatment decisions; ensures service notes include appropriate clinical details.
Records results of primary evaluation and diagnosis using the approved diagnostic tools; ensures documentation aligns with contract requirements.
Completes documentation consistent with center guidelines and on the same day when possible for continuity of care and communication; ensures elements required for CPT billing codes are included.
Updates diagnoses at least annually and as needed.
Monitors vitals as appropriate.
Orders laboratory studies as needed per prescribing guidelines and DCMHMR Standing Lab Orders; reviews lab results and addresses abnormalities in a timely manner.
Prescribes medications and maintenance treatment; obtains informed consent from clients or legally authorized representatives; performs AIMS testing as appropriate and per TAC guidelines; monitors labs per Standing Lab Orders and abnormal lab value procedures; documents rationales and avoids polypharmacy unless clinically justified; collaborates with clients to incorporate recovery-based language and preferences; provides patient and family education per PFEP program requirements.
Works as a member of the treatment team and makes recommendations for plans of care; seeks consultation with the Assistant Medical Director and Psychiatric Peer Team on difficult cases.
Refers clients to appropriate medical and community resources; coordinates with case management, care coordination, and nursing staff.
Provides crisis care to new and existing adult and C&A clients referred by crisis teams and crisis services; participates in telephonic on-call rotation; provides consultations to RNs and Crisis Residential Unit nursing as needed.
Provides and documents services according to Medical Board, DCMHMR, State Pharmacy Board, HHSC, DADS, and TAC rules; ensures notes meet Medicaid or other third-party billing requirements; assists with disability benefits paperwork and related documentation when requested.
Practices workplace safety; adheres to universal precautions and infection control; promptly informs staff of safety hazards.
Attends regularly scheduled meetings and trainings; participates in clinical team and committee meetings.
Provides emergency interventions as needed (PMAB, CPR, first aid) and maintains emergency intervention training per DCMHMR policies and procedures.
Provides courteous, professional services; demonstrates cultural sensitivity and awareness; supervises and delegates prescriptive authority to APRNs as required by law; collaborates with case managers and other treatment team members; supports walk-in and crisis clients; takes initiative and contributes to solutions.
Qualifications Education, Training And Experience (including Licensure And Certification)
Graduation from an accredited college of medicine with a medical degree and psychiatric specialty required.
Board Certification in Psychiatry; prior experience with the MHMR priority population; prior experience with dual diagnosis (developmental disabilities, substance abuse and mental illness) and prior experience working with children and adolescents preferred.
Licenses, Certification, And Other Qualifications
Medical licensure must be current and without restriction
Must have prescriptive authority
Must maintain current licensure including DEA
All job specific training must be completed within 30 days of hire
Must maintain a valid Texas driver's license, auto liability insurance and a driving record acceptable to the Center's insurance requirements
Maintain current CPR certification
Willingness to provide clinical supervision and delegation of prescriptive authority to Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work with and treat individuals with severe and persistent mental illness
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of psychiatric principles and methods; of general medicine; and of the principles and practices in the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.
Skill in the care and treatment of patients, in the use of medical and psychiatric diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment, in conducting psychiatric research, and in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat mental disorders; to interpret psychological diagnoses and analyses; to communicate effectively; and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.
Working knowledge of computers, proficiency in typing to be able to document in a timely and efficient manner, ability to use and document in center's Electronic Health Record System.
Ability and skills needed to provide services using Telepsych modality.
Ability and skills to use instant messaging system.
